1. Honor 9A

Honor 9A
11 AM | 6th August 2020
  • Long lasting battery life
  • Triple rear camera setup
  • Decent HD IPS display

Honor 9A is a budget Android smartphone priced well under Rs.8,999 available for purchase via flash sale method on August 6th through Amazon.

This entry-level smartphone has a lot going for it in terms of hardware as well as software features which makes it stand out from the rest of the competition in its price range.

Design and Build Quality

The Honor 9A has a glass front, plastic back design with a plastic frame in between. This smartphone from Honor weighs just 185g despite having a beefy 5000 mAh battery inside.

The glossy glass finish with attractive colour options makes this phone look premium in hand.

This is a dual SIM smartphone with a dedicated SD card slot for memory expansion without sacrificing the second SIM slot.

The fingerprint scanner on this device is located in the rear, placed comfortably in the natural finger resting position for easy unlocking.

The Honor 9A comes with a micro USB port which is a bit of bummer since there are smartphones in the price range with the modern USB Type C port out there.

This port supports USB OTG, meaning you can hook up a portable media drive to this phone to browse or view the files inside.

Display

The Honor 9A has a 6.3-inch HD IPS LCD with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. This roughly translates to a pixel count of 297ppi which is a very much acceptable number for this price range.

Thanks to the water drop notch camera on top, the Honor 9A has a screen to body ratio of 81.3%, making it perfect for media consumption.

The 20:9 aspect ratio of this display also makes this device easy to use with a single hand.

Processor

The Honor 9A is powered by the MediaTek Helio P22 which is plenty powerful to carry out almost all day to day tasks with ease.

The 3GB RAM on board and the 64GB storage will further help this device to perform smooth, even with light multi-tasking.

If you are buying this smartphone for gaming, we’d suggest you not to. The Helio P22 can handle casual gaming but not titles such as PUBG or Fortnite.

Camera

The Honor 9A features a triple rear camera setup which consists of a 13MP primary sensor, a 5MP ultrawide sensor and a 2MP depth sensor for portrait shots.

In the front, there is an 8MP shooter with support for HDR photos.

Both the front and rear cameras can record Full HD video up to 30fps.

Software

The Honor 9A runs on Android 10 OS but doesn’t come with the regular Google services such as the play store or the GMS (Google Messaging Service). Instead, you will get the Huawei App Gallery and the HMS (Huawei Messaging Service).

Please keep in mind if you are into downloading a lot of apps onto your phone. Some of the mainstream popular apps are not yet available on the Huawei App gallery as of yet.

Battery

The Honor 9A packs in a large 5000mAh Li-ion battery. The company claims that this battery can last well over two days of heavy to medium use.

There is also a reverse charging feature where you can take power from this battery to juice up your devices such as wireless earbuds and Bluetooth neckbands.

2. Redmi Note 9 Pro

Redmi Note 9 Pro
12 PM | 6th August 2020
  • Powerful Snapdragon 720G CPU
  • Massive 5020mAh battery
  • HDR capable FHD+ display

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is one of the best smartphones that you can purchase from Rs.13,999 in the Indian market at present.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G CPU inside, the Redmi Note 9 Pro delivers buttery smooth performance for delightful smartphone experience.

Design and Build quality

The Redmi Note 9 Pro features a glass sandwich design with a plastic frame in the middle.

Both the front and back glass is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The fit and finish of this smartphone are miles ahead of its competitors, which we are familiar with.

Two main differences of this smartphone with the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the camera design and the location of the fingerprint sensor.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro has a square-shaped camera module which not everyone might be a huge fan of.

The side-mounted fingerprint is easily accessible and doubles up a power button.

Display

The Redmi Note 9 Pro features is a 6.67-inch full HD+ display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels.

This display is a 20:9 aspect ratio panel with 395ppi pixel density. The colour and contrast levels are good and the HDR certified panel takes the media consumption experience to another level..

The punch hole display in the front allows in for immersive visual experience while watching movies or playing games.

Processor and Performance

Redmi has gone the Qualcomm route with the Note 9 Pro. This device packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset clocked at 2.3GHz.

This is an 8nm chipset compared to the 12nm G90T on Redmi note 8 pro. So when it comes to power efficiency, the Redmi Note 9 Pro has some serious advantage.

The UFS2.1 64GB storage and the 4GB LPDDRX RAM will work well in tune with the Snapdragon 720G to make the performance of this smartphone top-notch.

Camera

The Redmi Note 9 Pro features a quad-camera system in the rear. The main 48MP sensor has an f/1.9 aperture and takes some of the detailed shots in its segment.

Rest of the camera is the same from the Note 8 Pro, including an 8MP wide-angle sensor, a 5MP macro camera and a 2MP depth-sensing unit for bokeh mode shots.

The camera output quality is generally good with good amounts of details in favourable lighting conditions.

The rear camera of this smartphone is capable of shooting 4K videos at 30fps.

One main factor differentiating the Redmi note 9 pro from the Note 8 Pro is that the camera app comes with manual controls for the video as well.

The front 16MP shooter is a wide-angle sensor which delivers good results.

Miscellaneous

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is one of the first devices in the market with support for the NAVIC system.

NAVIC is an indigenous positioning system similar to GPS and GLONASS and delivers faster satellite lock and accurate positioning in the Indian subcontinent.

Battery Life

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is powered by a beefier 5020mAh battery inside which is rated to last for a day and a half with heavy usage.

Expect this phone to last for around three days with light to medium usage as well. Redmi ships an 18W fast charger in the box to juice up the device faster.

3. Redmi Note 9

Redmi Note 9
2 PM | 6th August 2020
  • Gaming oriented Helio G85 CPU
  • Bundled 22.5W fast charger
  • Excellent Full HD display

The Redmi Note 9 is the most recently launched smartphone from the Redmi stable which is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 CPU.

With a price tag starting as low as Rs.11,999 the Note 9 shares a lot of resemblance to the Note 9 Pro in terms of design and battery capacity.

Design and Build Quality

The Redmi Note 9 shares a lot of similarity with the Note 9 Pro in terms of build quality and design.

The front display is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which will save the display from accidental scratches.

Even though Xiaomi hasn’t officially given any IP rating with this smartphone, the special water repellent coating on the body will keep liquid droplets away.

The button placement is similar to that of the Note 9 Pro with the exception being the fingerprint sensor.

Unlike the Note 9 Pro, this device has a dedicated fingerprint scanner placed in the rear, below the square-shaped camera module.

Display

The Redmi Note 9 features a 6.53-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels with an effective pixel density of around 395ppi.

With a peak brightness of 450 nits, this display should be very legible even under bright sunlight outdoors.

Processor

The Redmi Note 9 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 processor which is manufactured based on a 12nm process.

This processor coupled with the 4GB/6GB RAM performs fine with all the day to day apps and games without any issues.

The Helio G85 is a gaming-centric processor with which you will be able to play titles such as PUBG and Fortnite in medium graphics settings.

Camera

The Redmi Note 9 comes with a quadruple rear camera setup which includes a 48MP primary sensor, 8MP ultrawide sensor, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth-sensing unit.

In the front, there is a 13MP selfie shooter with support for HDR photos.

Both the front and the rear cameras can record full HD videos at 30fps.

Software

Just like any other Redmi smartphone, the Redmi Note 9 runs on Android 10 OS with the custom MIUI 11 skin on top.

Battery

The Redmi Note 9 is powered by a 5020mAh Li-ion battery which will last you for a day and a half quite comfortably – even with heavy usage including gaming.

Redmi is generously including a 22.5W fast charger in the box for quickly juicing up this mammoth battery in just under an hour and 30 minutes.

4. Redmi Note 9 Pro Max

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max
4 PM | 6th August 2020
  • Excellent 64MP primary camera unit
  • Long lasting battery life
  • Colour accurate FHD+ display

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is the flagship model from the Redmi’s Note series lineup with a 64MP primary camera for photography enthusiasts.

Sporting the exact design and CPU as the Redmi Note 9 Pro, the main differentiating factors on this smartphone are the difference in the primary camera, front camera and the included 33W charging adapter.

Build Quality and Design

For a premium budget smartphone priced under Rs.20,000, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has an exceptional build quality. The all-glass body feels firm and easy to hold in hand.

The curved edges help this comparatively large device easy to hold and operate with a single hand.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max looks similar to many of the expensive flagships in the market with a central quad camera set up at the back and a punch-hole display upfront.

What makes this device stand out from the pack is the inclusion of a liquid cooling technology that will avoid the device from getting hot while gaming or any other intense resource-hungry operations.

Processor and Performance

Most of the mid-range smartphones today feature perfectly capable, but not necessarily high-end processors.

This is slowly changing with smartphone manufactures including powerful chips even inside the mid-range devices for better performance.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max comes with the top of the line mid-range Snapdragon 720G processor for exceptional performance.

Launching with 6/8GB RAM variants, the Redmi Note 9 Pro max with its super-fast UFS2.1 storage can run apps and games with relative ease.

Display

The Redmi Note 9 Pro features a large 6.67-inch full HD+ display which reproduces stunning lifelike images with true to life colours.

This IPS display has excellent viewing angles and gives a sharp and crisp output, thanks to the 403 ppi pixel density even with this large size.

The display has a punch-hole cutout for the front camera. It looks much better than the notch in our opinion.

Camera

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max comes loaded with a rear quad camera setup. This AI quad-camera setup consists of a primary 64MP camera followed by 8MP ultra-wide sensor, 5MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro mode shooter.

The front camera is a 32MP shooter capable of delivering clear selfies even in low-light environments.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is a beast when it comes to smartphone photography.

The 12MP pixel binned image from the 64MP sensor has a lot of details and comes out with excellent colour accuracy.

Redmi has even included a pro-mode for video enabling you to tweak the camera output further.

The only gripe we had with the camera department is that there is no Optical Image Stabilization available.

Software

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max runs on Android 10 OS with MIUI 11 skin on top. Unfortunately, the MIUI skin comes bloated with a lot of unnecessary apps.

Most of these apps can be manually uninstalled but it remains a major hassle anyway.

Battery Life

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has 5020mAh Li-ion battery inside which will easily last over a day even with heavy use.

Xiaomi is already known for including higher capacity batteries on all their smartphones

This time the company has even bundled a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 certified 33W fast charger that will let you charge the device even faster.

5. Redmi 9 Prime

Redmi 9 Prime
10 AM | 6th August 2020
  • Vibrant Full HD IPS display
  • Long-lasting 5020mAh battery
  • Quadruple rear camera setup

Redmi 9 Prime is the entry-level 9 series smartphone from Redmi which is placed just below the Redmi note 9.

Starting at Rs.9,999 for the 4GB/64GB variant, the Redmi 9 prime is one of the most value for money smartphones available in the sub. Rs.10,000 price segment.

Design and Build Quality

The Redmi 9 Prime has a glass front and a plastic back with a plastic frame in the middle.

This helps the smartphone to be weighed less than 200g even with a large 5000mAh processor.

Redmi calls the design of this smartphone the Aura 360 pattern which we are familiar with the likes of POCO X2.

The circular gradient pattern around the camera looks and feels very premium.

Redmi has included a water repellent coating over the chassis to offer some sort of protection from liquid spills and light rains.

The physical fingerprint scanner on this smartphone is placed below the vertical camera module, just like that on the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Display

This is one area where Redmi 9 Prime beats its competition by a significant margin.

While smartphones such as Realme Narzo and Motorola G8 Power lite come with HD+ displays in this price segment, Redmi has decided to include a 6.53-inch full HD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

This display is crazy good for the price in terms of colour accuracy and sharpness. It has a peak brightness of up to 400 nits for easy sunlight visibility as well.

Protected with Corning gorilla glass 3 on top, the Note 9 Prime has a pixel density close to 400ppi, which makes it quite comparable with the display of the higher-priced Redmi Note 9 Pro.

Processor

The Redmi 9 Prime is powered by MediaTek Helio G80 CPU, which is manufactured on a 12nm process.

This chipset is almost twice better than the Snapdragon 439 we had on the Redmi 8 smartphone.

Available in one RAM and two storage variants, both the 4GB/64GB and the 4GB/128GB Note 9 Prime is very fast and responsive.

Running on the latest Android 10 OS with MIUI skin on top, the Redmi 9 prime can even play games without any issues.

You will be able to enjoy titles such as PUBG and Fortnite with medium graphics settings and consistent frame rates.

Camera

The Redmi Note 9 has a quadruple rear camera setup which consists of a 13MP primary camera, 8MP ultrawide camera, 5MP macro camera and 2MP depth-sensing unit.

The front camera is an 8MP shooter with HDR and panorama support.

Both these camera units can capture videos at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30fps.

Battery life

The Redmi 9 prime packs a massive 5020mAh Li-ion battery inside.

This battery is the same as that of the one found on its elder siblings – the Redmi Note 9 and the Redmi Note 9 Pro series.

With moderate to heavy usage, the Redmi 9 Prime is rated to last over two days on a single charge.

This device supports 18W fast charging if you can invest in a separate charger.
