MSI is a Taiwan-based multinational information technology company that manufactures affordable premium gaming laptops and other computer hardware accessories.

The MSI GF63 Thin is a powerful lightweight gaming laptop that provides excellent performance and gaming experience for the price tag of Rs.64,990.

Design and Build Quality

The MSI GF63 Thin has a physical dimension of 359 x 254 x 21.7 mm and it weighs just 1.86Kg.

We were quite astonished with how light the laptop is and what shook us the most is that the laptop has a metal chassis yet still, it does not feel like a tank while carrying it in a backpack.

The lid top cover has a brushed finish and an aggressive-looking MSI logo positioned at the center of the display lid.

The hinge mechanism provides smooth lid opening and closing and it prevents the lid from wobbling when sitting under a speedy ceiling fan.

Speaking of thermals, the base plate has a large number of vents for the air intake. The dual fans inside dissipates the heat through the left and rear side exhaust vents.

Connectivity Features:

The MSI GF63 Thin features the following I/O ports:

  • 1 x HDMI port

Processor and Performance

The showrunner of the MSI GF63 Thin is the Intel i5 10th generation H-series hexa-core processor with a base clock speed of 2.5GHz and its turbo boost up to 4.5GHz.

This CPU still can not be considered an outdated processor as it can deliver breathtaking performance when compared to the eleventh generation offerings.

The 8GB RAM onboard is adequate for running daily tasks and games.

MSI has provided the RAM expansion provision up to 64GB which can be useful someday as there are games available in the market which demand more RAM to run.

The one that handles intense graphic processing is the 4GB DDR6 Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 dedicated GPU. You can play most of the modern Esport titles at 60fps in high settings and can render FHD videos without any problem.

The 512GB SSD plays an important role in boosting the performance of the laptop to a whole new level. It loads the system faster and app opening time is significantly faster.

Display

The MSI GF63 Thin sports a 15.6-inch 144Hz Full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The 144Hz high refresh rate will provide you with an ultra-smooth user experience whenever you scroll or play games that support a high refresh rate.

It’s a bright panel that can be used indoors very conveniently but outdoor usability is not that good.

Thanks to the IPS technology, the side viewing angles are good.

This is a wide viewing display with slim bezels so you will get an amazing experience while consuming content, work and playing games.

Miscellaneous

The MSI GF63 Thin comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS and MSI has announced that the Windows 11 update for this machine will be available soon.

The keyboard on this one is tenkeyless and not full-sized which is acceptable, what we did not like is that it has only red backlit, an RGB backlit keyboard would have been much better.

Speaking of typing experience, the keycaps are relatively large and clicky as well hence typing feedback is excellent.

The trackpad is of standard quality and it can read all types of gestures input correctly.

Battery Life

The MSI GF63 Thin has a 3-cell 51Wh lithium battery inside that will provide 4-5 hours of power backup on mixed usages like browsing and multimedia.

HP is one of the top contenders in the laptop market that competes against the brands such as Asus, Lenovo, and Acer.

The HP Victus is a completely new series recently launched in India and the laptop we have here has powerful internal hardware that promises to deliver a smooth computing performance.

Design and Build Quality

The design of the HP Victus reminds us of the HP Omen series laptop.

The HP Victus is made solely from plastic and the flex on the lid cover is a bit more noticeable than usual, though the build quality is decent.

The V logo in the center of the lid and the matte top surface makes this machine look aesthetically pleasing.

If you consider the hardware specifications, this laptop is a gaming machine but aesthetics tells a different story. No sign in the design shows that this machine is a gaming laptop.

Since we are talking about video editing laptops the looks will not be a deal-breaker. The hinge is a bit loose on this one and the lid wobbles when working under a speedy fan.

Weighing at 2.48Kg, the HP Victus is said to be very heavy, and carrying it on the shoulder will be a tad bit difficult.

Thermals are where we are disappointed the most. At the bottom side of the unit, it looks like it has so much space for air intake but if you look closely you discover that it only has cuts where the fan is placed as a result CPU temperature goes up to 100 celsius even while playing games like Valorant.

We recommend using an external cooling pad for better thermal performance.

Connectivity Features:

The HP Victus features the following I/O ports:

  • 3 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • RJ-45 LAN port
  • SD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

This professional-looking laptop HP Victus is powered by the fifth-generation AMD Ryzen 5 – 5600H hexa-core processor with a base clock speed of 3.3GHz and its turbo boost frequency of 4.2GHz.

HP has also included a 4GB DDR6 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU that offers good performance on video editing and gaming.

This machine has 8GB RAM onboard offering a buttery smooth performance on multitasking and you can also extend memory up to 32GB which will be required if you are planning to use resource-intensive applications such as Adobe After Effects.

Speaking of the storage, there is a 512GB SSD which accelerates the system boot-up process and app loading time is minimal.

Thankfully, there is another slot for SSD expansion and you can increase the storage capacity up to 4TB.

Display

The HP Victus features a 16.1-inch Full HD anti-glare IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This panel has thin bezels and thanks to its slightly large form factor, the media consumption and gaming experience are pleasant and immersive.

The display has only a 60Hz refresh rate which is a bit disappointing but for editing purposes, it doesn’t matter much.

The colour reproduction of this panel is good and the side viewing angles are good as well, thanks to the IPS technology.

Miscellaneous

The HP Victus comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. In most gaming machines you don’t get MS Office software for free but this HP machine has it and to utilize it all -you have to do is to login into Microsoft account.

The full-sized single LED backlit keyboard on the deck offers tactile feedback and you can work effectively in dark environments.

The trackpad is quite large though and it supports multi-finger gestures.

The webcam at the top chin of the display provides a good video quality when sitting in a room that has sufficient lighting conditions.

The speaker of this laptop is fine tuned by Bang & Olufsen but audio quality is average so use headphones to experience best sound quality.

Battery Life

The HP Victus is powered by a 4-cell 70Wh lithium battery rated to last for approximately 5 hours with normal to heavy use.

The bundled 150W power adapter will recharge the battery levels from 0 – 100% in 2 to 2:30 hours.

Verdict

If you are looking for a video editing machine that looks professional and offers the same performance as a gaming machine then HP Victus is right for you.

Priced under Rs.70,000, we like the HP Victus for its performance, however the design could have been better.

Buying Guide For The Best Laptop Under Rs.70,000

Laptops have become a quintessential part of our daily lives as the era moved towards digitization and the resulting internet revolution that changed almost everything around us.

With stiff competition among different brands, the prices of laptops have come down without any compromise on the performance metrics.

For a budget of Rs.70,000, there are a ton of laptop models out there with capable internals for gaming, daily use and content creation.

In this short buying guide, we aim to list a few points which should be enough to ensure that your purchase won’t go bust.

Build Quality

The budget of Rs.70,000 is borderline premium and you can expect well-built laptops in this price segment.

There are laptops with metal chassis as well as plastic available for purchase in this price bracket.

Most of the gaming laptops in this price segment will be made from plastic while the notebooks and casual use laptops are available as a full metal build, preferably aluminium.

If you are looking for a daily use machine, we’d suggest you go for a thin and lightweight metal chassis notebook and if you are after performance computing, a plastic chassis laptop will be your best bet.

CPU

The latest processors to hit the Indian market recently are Intel eleventh generation series and the AMD Ryzen fourth generation.

The performance gaps between Intel and AMD processors have come down a lot despite the price difference.

Tenth generation Intel processors are also a good choice for this price if casual everyday usage is your primary concern.

While choosing a processor, always look for the clock speeds. Higher the variation between base clock speed and the turbo boost speed better will be the performance as well as the battery life of the laptop.

GPU

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a standalone processor dedicated for graphics calculations.

If you are buying a laptop for gaming or content creation works such as video editing, it is necessary to have a dedicated GPU onboard, without which you can utilize the full potential of the machine.

Even with dedicated graphics, you should be aware of the entry-level MX series and premium GTX series GPUs from Nvidia.

While MX series dedicated graphics work well for daily usage, it is preferable to go for a machine with GTX grade graphics for hardcore gaming and video editing.

Display

While finalizing on a laptop display, there are two things worth noting – display size and the resolution.

All the laptops retailing in the sub. Rs.70,000 price point comes with Full HD panels with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Now speaking of the display size, if media consumption is your primary concern, going with the regular 15.6-ich panel is fine. But if you wish to travel a lot with the laptop in your backpack, we suggest you go with the smaller 14-inch laptops.

Having additional features such as IPS technology and the anti-glare coating is very much desirable in this price bracket.

Storage

To be honest, never go for a laptop with just a single HDD as the storage medium. HDDs are outdated and the modern SSD storage is much faster and reliable.

You can either go with laptops having hybrid SSD+HDD storage or SSD storage alone.

Keep in mind that a faster SSD storage is as important as the processor in determining the overall computing performance.

    • Hi Kshitij!

The Asus Vivobook 14 is powered by the latest fourth generation Ryzen 5 processor and is capable of fulfilling all your academic needs without any issues. The integrated Vega 6 graphics offers significantly faster graphics performance when compared with the Intel integrated graphics available out there. If you’re not in to gaming, this laptop is definitely a good choice for a lightweight, powerful laptop. Unfortunately, the RAM comes soldered on board and you can’t upgrade it to boost performance further. However, for academic tasks, we think 8GB RAM will work just fine.

      • Hi Kshitij!

Laptop displays usually come with low peak brightness levels when compared with the smaller sized smartphone panels. While these displays work perfectly fine indoors don’t expect them to perform the same under direct sunlight. Yes, you will be able to view the display outdoors but with the sun directly above your head, it’s obvious to face some difficulty in screen legibility. It’s the case with most of the laptops.

    • Hi Saif!

The comparison between two processors is impossible without the particular model number. However, assuming you are asking about Asus TUF laptops priced under Rs.70,000 – there are two models available, the Asus TUF FX505GT with Intel i5 9300H and the Asus TUF FX505DT with the Ryzen 5 3550H. Between this laptops, we’d suggest you to go for the Intel powered laptop as it consistently better performance in benchmarks and other load tests, which effectively means better real world performance. Both of these laptops are priced conveniently under Rs.65,000 currently in the Indian market.
