  • Well optimized Apple Watch OS
  • Accurate sensors onboard

Premium build quality

Apple is one of the most popular tech companies in the world. They redefined the wearable technology industry with the introduction of Apple Watch back in 2015.

Recently Apple released the Apple Watch Series 6 smartwatch which is the latest iteration of its immensely popular Apple Watch lineup, available for purchase at just Rs.52,900.

Build Quality and Design

The Apple Watch Series 6 is just a minor upgrade in terms of build and design when compared to the Apple Watch Series 5. The Series 6 is more of an incremental update.

The casing of this smartwatch is made of aluminium and it comes in different colours such as red, space grey, gold, etc. Do note that the casing is also available in stainless steel for certain colours.

The Apple Watch comes with a soft silicone sports band. Apple has also launched a wide range of bands that can be purchased separately.

Apart from the similar design aesthetics, the only new addition you can find on the Apple Watch Series 6 is the few new sensors on its back.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is water-resistant, more specifically it is swim-proof which means you can wear it even while swimming without any worries.

The display on the Apple Watch Series 6 is the same 1.78-inch Retina LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels.

The Apple Watch Series 6 has an always-on display and Apple claims that the brightness of the display is 2.5x more than the previous iteration of the Apple Watch.

This display has a peak brightness of 1000 nits which makes it easily visible outdoors, even under direct sunlight.

The display of the smartwatch has a screen-to-body ratio of 60%, which is impressive considering the compactness of the dial.

The whole UI, along with the icons and text look gorgeous on this OLED panel and is a joy to use.

The Apple Watch Series 6 is exclusively designed to work with iPhones. Pairing the smartwatch with other Apple devices is a simple, straightforward process and can be done within a few seconds.

Apple Watches are known for their industry-leading wearable technologies that other companies are forced to adopt, but never get it as right as Apple does.

The new Apple Watch Series 6 has an all-new blood oxygen sensor that measures oxygen saturation. Measuring blood oxygen level has become quite common among the public due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and this watch returns an accurate measure of the same.

This smartwatch also can get an ECG to provide a detailed analysis of the heart, thanks to the high-quality heart rate sensor onboard.

The Apple Watch is designed to inform the user regarding the anomalies in heart rate if it detects so. In short, this smartwatch monitors the heart 24×7 for any abnormalities in your body metabolism.

Fall detection is yet another feature that works so well with the Apple Watch. In case you happen to fall, the watch sounds an alarm.

You can turn off the alarm manually or send an emergency response. If the watch detects no movement after a fall for over a minute, then the emergency response to the pre-set numbers is sent automatically.

The Apple Watch Series 6 cellular variant supports e-SIM connectivity for calling and texting right from the watch without the help of a smartphone around.

The Apple Watch Series 6 runs on Apple’s proprietary Watch 7.1 OS. The Watch OS runs buttery smooth with 1GB RAM and 32GB of storage inside.

The new S6 dual-band chip inside the Series 6 smartwatch is up to 20% faster than the one inside the Series 5 watch. This new chip also supports faster and stable 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch Series 6 lasts for up to 18 hours with the always-on display and intermittent GPS usage.

The magnetic dock charger that comes bundled with the Apple Watch Series 6 takes around 2.30 hours to juice up the battery from zero to hundred per cent.

If you want the best smartwatch out there and doesn’t care for the budget, this is it. It will be a better choice if you are already invested in the Apple product ecosystem as the sync between multiple devices will be seamless.

Samsung is a multinational electronics conglomerate headquartered in South Korea. They are one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of consumer electronics products all across the world.

Samsung entered the smartwatch market with their Gear series of smartwatches, which later rebranded to Galaxy Watch, of which the Galaxy Watch 3 is the latest.

Build Quality and Design

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 features a circular dial and comes with either a stainless steel or titanium frame.

The build quality of this smartwatch is premium and the premium fit and finish justifies its price as well.

This smartwatch comes with a leather strap that gives it quite an exquisite look. Galaxy Watches are known for their rotating mechanical dial that can be used to navigate through the various menus within the UI.

This premium smartwatch comes certified with IP68 rating for dust and water resistance for worry-free outdoor usage.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 features a 1.4-inch super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels.

Being an OLED panel, the inky deep blacks offer infinite contrast and the UI including the icons and text look punchy and vivid to the eyes.

With a pixel density of 364ppi, the Galaxy Watch 3 display is the sharpest among the lot, even when compared with the Apple Watch.

The display of the watch is set to always on by default but you can also set it as raise to wake for additional battery savings.

This display has Corning’s Gorilla Glass DX protection from shattering and accidental scratches.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 can be paired with your Android and iOS smartphones, kudos to Samsung for not limiting the watch usage only to Samsung users.

This smartwatch has all the basic features that are typically found on other smartwatches in this segment such as the heart rate sensor, SPo2 sensor, gyroscope and accelerometer.

The Galaxy Watch 3 supports multiple sports modes to which you can set the watch to track sport-specific workout details.

The integrated GPS chip inside ensures the watch will track real-time locations accurately without the need to pair it up with the smartphone.

Similar to the Apple Watch Series 6, the Galaxy Watch 3 also features ECG and fall detection.

The Galaxy Watch 3 also includes hardware for ECG (which is not yet certified for use in India) and fall detection that is similar to the one on the Apple Watch Series 6.

Even though the variant we are discussing here is the Bluetooth only version, there is an LTE version available.

The Bluetooth version of this smartwatch can still attend calls routed via the smartphone, thanks to the microphone and the speaker inside.

This premium smartwatch from Samsung runs on their own Tizen OS, a lightweight Linux based operating system.

With the 1GB RAM and 8GB of ROM onboard, this smartwatch delivers fluid performance without any noticeable lags.

Battery Life

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is powered by a 340mAh battery that lasts for up to two days of use on a single charge.

The charging dock bundled with the watch juices up the battery to 100% within 2 hours.

This watch also supports wireless Qi charging with a compatible charger.

If you are after a well-built smartwatch with comparable performance and build quality of Apple Watch, the Galaxy Watch 3 from Samsung is an ideal choice for a budget under Rs.30,000.

3. Apple Watch SE

Apple needs no introduction, they are the biggest company when it comes to technology. Apple is known for being the trendsetters in the technological world.

With the recent launch of the Apple Watch Series 6, the company also launched the Apple Watch SE which is a more affordable smartwatch for those who want to get into the Apple ecosystem.

Build Quality and Design

In terms of the design, you won’t find the Apple Watch SE to look all that different from the Apple Watch Series 6. This is because the changes in the watch are not in its design but its internals.

The casing of the Apple Watch SE is made from aluminium which is beautifully crafted and feels quite premium in hand. On the right side of the square dial, you have a button and the crown which also doubles as another button.

This smartwatch features a sports band that is made of silicone and is comfortable to wear.

The Apple Watch SE is water-resistant for up to 50 meters which means you can wear your watch without worrying about damage from water.

The Apple Watch SE features the same display tech as that of the flagship Series 6 Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch SE comes with a 1.78-inch Retina LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels.

Unlike the Series 6, the Apple Watch SE does not have an always-on display. But this is not a big trade-off per se.

This display has a peak brightness of 1000 nits which makes it easily visible outdoors, even under direct sunlight.

The display of the smartwatch has a screen-to-body ratio of 60%, which is impressive considering the compactness of the dial.

It is impossible to tell the difference between the OLED panels in the SE and Series 6 which is a good thing for those who are opting for the cheaper smartwatch.

Processor and performance

As we mentioned earlier, the difference between the Series 6 and SE lies in its internals.

The Apple Watch SE runs on the older Apple S5 processor and not the latest Apple S6 processor found on the Series 6. This means that the watch is not as powerful as the Series 6 but that is not a problem considering it is still more powerful than most other smartwatches available in the Indian market.

For a lag-free experience, the Watch SE has 1GB RAM and you also have 32GB of internal memory to store applications.

The Apple Watch SE runs on the Watch OS 7 like the Apple Watch Series 6 and it is upgradable to Watch OS 7.3.

The feature set of the Apple Watch SE is loaded but when compared to the Apple Watch Series 6, certain features are missing.

Let us look at some of the features that are missing from the Watch SE compared to Series 6.

The Apple Watch SE does have a heart rate sensor that monitors your heart rate 24×7 and this works fine but unfortunately, you do not have the Bloody Oxygen level and ECG sensor found in the Series 6.

The lack of a Blood Oxygen sensor can be a heavy hitter because in this era of the Corona pandemic where measurement of blood oxygen levels plays a vital role for those who have been affected.

The rest of the features in the Apple Watch SE are the same as the Series 6 such as fall detection, emergency SOS, GPS, etc.

Like all previous Apple Watches, the SE is compatible only with iPhones and not with Android devices.

The Apple Watch SE has a speaker and a mic that lets you make phone calls and you can even play video games or watch videos on the watch.

This smartwatch is available in both the cellular or non-cellular variant. The cellular variant lets you make phone calls even when your iPhone is not around.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch SE has a non-removable rechargeable battery that has a battery life of up to 18 hours. The battery life is decent and you will have to charge the watch daily.

To juice up the battery, there is the proprietary charger that comes bundled with the watch or you can also wirelessly charge the Apple Watch SE with any Qi Wireless charger.

The Apple Watch SE is a perfect choice for someone who is already a part of the Apple ecosystem and has been hesitant to pay a premium price for their smartwatches.

Now you can enjoy the Apple Watch experience at almost half the price of their flagship Apple Watch Series 6.

4. Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020

Versatile Smartwatch

  • Dual AMOLED + LCD panel
  • Google Wear OS
  • Inbuilt-GPS

Military-grade tested

IP68 water resistance

Dual material strap

No Spo2 monitor

Mobvoi is a brand name that you might have never heard of before. But remember, this is a name you are going to hear more often, thanks to their amazing lineup of premium smartwatches.

The TicWatch Pro 2020 is an affordable flagship smartwatch from Mobvoi that gives more than what you ask for in the sub-Rs. 30,000 price segment.

Design and Build Quality

The TicWatch Pro 2020 is made from premium materials. The casing of the watch is made of durable carbon fiber reinforced with high-strength nylon while the bottom and the bezel of the watch are made from stainless steel.

This smartwatch has been put through rigorous military-grade testing and is one of the most durable smartwatches that you can purchase in India right now.

With the circular dial, the watch looks similar to the likes of the Samsung Gear and Galaxy Watch.

This smartwatch features a hybrid strap with genuine Italian leather on its outward side and skin-friendly silicone on its inward side. The strap is comfortable and at the same time also looks elegant. It is possible to detach the strap and fit a strap of your choice.

The TicWatch 2020 Pro has official IP68 water & dustproof rating. If you happen to get it drenched in rain or want to go for a swim then fret not because the watch will be perfectly fine.

The unique selling point of this watch is that it comes with two 1.39-inch displays. One of which is an LCD and the other an AMOLED. The AMOLED display has a resolution of 400×400 pixels which is extremely crisp.

This smartwatch features two modes, Smart and Essential. In Smart mode, we get to see the bright AMOLED display while in Essential mode the LCD takes over.

There is Gorilla Glass 3 for superior protection against scratches and drops. It is also anti-fingerprint so you don’t get smudges all over the display.

The brightness of the smartwatch can get quite high and outdoor visibility is good in both Smart and Essential mode.

Processor and performance

The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020 operates on Google’s Wear OS which is notorious for being laggy. But surprisingly on the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020, the Wear OS runs fine.

This lag-free experience is mainly because of the 1GB RAM present in the smartwatch.

Powering the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. This processor is capable of running anything you throw at it but is weaker than the newer Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor.

For downloading applications on your smartwatch, you get 4GB of internal storage. This lets you download third-party applications like you would on a smartphone.

The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020 ticks almost all the right boxes when it comes to its features except one.

The TicWatch Pro 2020 features a heart rate sensor to monitor your heart rate but it does lack one essential feature which is the Spo2 or blood oxygen level monitor. This is frankly disappointing considering the premium price tag of the smartwatch.

There are an accelerometer, gyroscope, and proximity sensors on this device which opens up a whole range of possibilities for enhanced usability.

With the inbuilt GPS, you can track and record your location easily with the companion app on your smartphone.

Speaking of the companion app, you can choose from a wide range of watch faces from the companion app to style your smartwatch.

We also get NFC support on the TicWatch Pro 2020 which lets you make contactless payment easily with just the flick of your wrist.

The smartwatch features a speaker and a mic. You can attend calls from your smartphone and also bring up the Google Assistant to ask questions or do tasks for you.

It is not possible to reply to text notifications by typing on the smartwatch but you do get the ability to quick reply or use Google Assistant to reply.

Battery Life

The battery life of this smartwatch depends on the mode on which you are using it. In Essential mode, the battery can last up to 30 days while in Smart mode the battery lasts between 2 to 5 days.

The bundled charger takes around 2-2.15 hours to recharge the battery completely.

The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 2020 is a worthy upgrade over the TicWatch Pro. This

Design and Build Quality

The Amazfit Stratos 3 has taken inspiration from the likes of the Galaxy Watch and Gear smartwatch series.

This smartwatch features the same circular dial design found in the Galaxy Watch.

For its build, Amazfit has utilized both metal and polycarbonate materials. This smartwatch features a stainless steel and zirconia ceramic bezel while the bottom casing is made from reinforced plastic.

The side buttons on the smartwatch are also made from stainless steel.

The silicone strap used with this premium smartwatch is comfortable. Since it is free size, the watch can fit any hand size. It is possible to detach the silicone strap to add a strap of your choices such as leather or metal.

This smartwatch is 5ATM water-resistant and even has a dedicated swimming mode. This means that you can submerge the smartwatch for up to 50m underwater.

The display of Amazfit Stratos 3 is interesting in many aspects. This device features a 1.34-inch full round transflective TFT display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels.

The transflective display is known for its ability to get brighter as more light hits the surface of this display.

This is a great convenience while using the smartwatch under direct sunlight.

Amazfit has provided Gorilla Glass 3 protection for the display which helps protect it from minor scratches and drops. It also has an anti-fingerprint coating which ensures there are no smudge marks.

This smartwatch has all the basic features you would expect from a sub-Rs. 15,000 watch such as a heart rate monitor, air pressure sensor, 6-axis accelerometer, 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, etc.

The Amazfit Stratos 3 is embedded with the Sony GNSS chip which supports four different global positioning systems including GPS, GLONASS, BEIDOU, and GALILEO.

Build Quality and Design

The Mi Watch Revolve dial is made from metal which in itself induces a sense of luxury and built to last feel.

Weighing at just 40g, this is one of the lightest smartwatches around the Rs.10,000 price bracket.

The strap of this smartwatch is made of silicone but it feels a bit slim and is not of the best quality. The strap is interchangeable and can be easily removed to swap with one of your choices.

The rear section of the Mi Watch Revolve houses the heart rate sensor and magnetic charging dots.

This watch, similar to most other smartwatches in this segment, is rated 5ATM water-resistant.

The Mi Watch Revolve features a 1.39-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels.

This display is very sharp and looks clean without any noticeable pixelation whatsoever.

This panel comes with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 protection to prevent accidental scratches on the display.

Thanks to the OLED panel, the text and icons look punchy and vivid. The brightness level of this watch is decent enough for effortless indoor as well as outdoor viewing.

The full-fledged Xiaomi wear companion app can be downloaded from the Google Playstore or Apple iOS store to customize and set this watch up.

The companion smartphone app lets you choose from over 100 watch faces to stylize the smartwatch to your liking.

This smartwatch features inbuilt GPS for independent locating tracking and has a barometer for elevation data.

The dynamic 24×7 heart rate monitor returns accurate results and it also measures the Vo2 max data which indicates the cardiorespiratory health.

This premium smartwatch from Mi supports 10 different professional sport modes to track the specific statistics while performing the same.

Similar to other smartwatches out there, the Mi Watch Revolve can be set to receive smartphone notifications in real-time including calls and message alerts.

Battery Life

Mi claims that in a single charge, the Mi Watch Revolve will last for up to 14 days.

However with GPS turned on always, expect the battery life to be significantly less than this 14-day claim from Xiaomi.

To charge up the device, you get a charging dock upon which you have to place your Mi Watch Revolve.

The Xiaomi Mi Watch Revolve is a beautiful smartwatch that is going to attract some attention in terms of design.

Buying Guide for Smartwatch in India

Who would have thought that a watch on our wrists would be able to monitor our health 24×7 or we could speak to people around the world through a watch?

Smartwatches have brought a revolutionary change in the watch industry just like how the iPhone revolutionized the smartphone industry.

If you are reading this then it is likely that you are planning to purchase a smartwatch for yourself but are not sure about which is the right one for you.

We at Bettershark have prepared a short buying guide to give you an insight into some of the factors that you should consider before purchasing a smartwatch.

So without wasting any more time let’s get right into it.

The casing of the smartwatch is also known as its body or frame. The material used for the casing of the smartwatch is a very crucial factor in determining its durability in the long term.

Smartwatches come in polycarbonate, stainless steel, and aluminium casing. Stainless steel and aluminium casing are the more durable ones.

Polycarbonate casing is common in budget smartwatches. There is nothing wrong with going for a polycarbonate casing but it won’t provide the premium feel which we get from a stainless steel or aluminium casing.

Smartwatches are available in two dial shapes – square, and circle. The shape of the dial in a smartwatch does not affect its performance and is purely an aesthetic choice.

If you prefer a more aggressive design for your smartwatch we recommend that you go for a square dial on the other hand if you prefer something more minimalistic then you should go for a circular dial.

The strap of a smartwatch is also a really important feature that deserves attention.

Smartwatches primarily come with a silicone strap, however, these silicone straps are not recommended for those who have allergic reactions to synthetic rubber.

You can also find smartwatches that have leather straps or metal chains although they are not that common.

We recommend that you go for a smartwatch with detachable straps so that you can add a strap of your choice rather than permanently sticking to the straps provided by the manufacturer.

The main reason you would buy a smartwatch is to get access to its wide range of features.

Smartwatches come loaded with various sensors such as heart rate monitor, SPo2, accelerometer, gyroscope, IR blaster, etc.

The feature set of the smartwatch varies according to its budget. The more premium the smartwatch the more features it has, some smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch 3 are capable of performing ECG readings which is advanced and can inform you of any cardiac anomalies.

People who have cardiac issues tend to benefit from the health and fitness features that these smartwatches provide.

Another important function in a smartwatch is calling and texting. Calling is possible in most top-tier smartwatches and the same goes for texting.

Budget smartwatches generally do not get calling functionality, hence if you want the ability to attend calls from your smartwatch then you would have to pay a premium.

It is recommended that you go for a smartwatch that is water-resistant because since a watch is worn at all times we never know when it might get drenched in water.

Smartwatches come with IP68 water resistance, 5ATM, and 3ATM water resistance.

According to Wikipedia IP68 is “dust and water-resistant” and can be “immersed in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes”.

5ATM water resistance means that the watch can be submerged in water for under 50 meters and 3ATM water resistance means that the watch can be submerged in water for 30 meters both up to 10 minutes.

With this we have reached the end of our buying guide, make sure that you go through the above-mentioned factors and choose the smartwatch that has the features suiting your needs.

  1. I have been following this article for a while. Why haven’t you updated the October article with the newly released Mobvoi Ticwatch pro 3? I do not understand how it wouldn’t make the cut if the Ticwatch S2 can make it to the list. I would love to see how it fares in comparison to the Galaxy Watch S3

    • Hi Nishanth!

We’re glad to know that you are following our website and the articles. We will be definitely updating the article within a few days and notify you with the same ASAP.

  2. Are you sure that the Fossil Gen 5 Garrett does not sport an in-built speaker as you have mentioned in the cons section of the watch? From what I have read online, it has a bigger dial and better water resistance. Otherwise, both Carlyle and Garrett sport pretty much the same specs under the hood

    • Hi Nishanth!

Thanks for pointing out the error. The Fossil Gen 5 Garett does sport an inbuilt speaker. We will edit the article to reflect the same.

      • Thanks for the clarification. The cons of Fossil Gen 5 Garrett, if you need to mention any, would be the battery life. I think for the price point, Samsung and Mobvoi have a much better battery life in comparison.

      • Hi Nishanth!

Thanks for your suggestion. For smartwatches with integrated GPS and large sized displays, the shortage in battery life is to be expected anyway. So we are avoiding that as a con which is a price customer has to pay for the features that comes with it in general.

    • Hi Ali!

Thanks for your suggestion. We will definitely include a separate category for wear OS powered smartwatches very soon.
