Apple is one of the most popular tech companies in the world. They redefined the wearable technology industry with the introduction of the Apple Watch back in 2015.

Recently Apple released the Apple Watch Series 7 smartwatch which is the latest iteration of its immensely popular Apple Watch lineup, available for purchase at just Rs.53,900.

Design and Build Quality

The Apple Watch 7 has the same noticeable design that we usually see with the Apple Watch range. It features a square-shaped dial with rounded corners.

There is a physical crown on the right side of the dial serving multiple functions such as scrolling through the menu or zooming in and out.

The crown is also needed when you need to record your ECG. The Apple Watch 7 weighs from about 32 grams to up to 51.5 grams depending on the dial size you have chosen.

Speaking of the dial , Apple offers the Watch Series 7 with multiple options such as aluminium, stainless steel, and titanium.

Display

The Apple Watch Series 7 (45mm) has the biggest display on our list. This smartwatch features a massive 1.9-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 396 x 484 pixels.

It offers a peak brightness of 1000 nits. Even the always-on state has a peak brightness of 500 nits.

Apple has shrunken the bezels on the 7 series compared to the previous generation of the Apple watches.

The big display on the watch helps to read the text as compared to the previous Apple watches. It runs on watchOS which offers a very fluent lag-free experience.

Features

Apple Watches are known for their industry-leading wearable technologies that other companies are forced to adopt, but never get it as right as Apple does.

The new Apple Watch Series 7 has an all-new blood oxygen sensor that measures oxygen saturation. Measuring blood oxygen level has become quite common among the public due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and this watch returns an accurate measure of the same.

This smartwatch also can get an ECG to provide a detailed analysis of the heart, thanks to the high-quality heart rate sensor onboard.

The Apple Watch is designed to inform the user regarding the anomalies in heart rate if it detects so. In short, this smartwatch monitors the heart 24×7 for any abnormalities in your body metabolism.

Fall detection is yet another feature that works so well with the Apple Watch. In case you happen to fall, the watch sounds an alarm.

You can turn off the alarm manually or send an emergency response. If the watch detects no movement after a fall for over a minute, then the emergency response to the pre-set numbers is sent automatically.

The Apple Watch Series 7 cellular variant supports e-SIM connectivity for calling and texting right from the watch without the help of a smartphone.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch Series 6 lasts for up to 18 hours with the always-on display and intermittent GPS usage.

The magnetic dock charger that comes bundled with the Apple Watch Series 7 takes around 1.45 hours to juice up the battery from zero to a hundred per cent.

Verdict

If you want the best smartwatch out there and doesn’t care for the budget, this is it. It will be a better choice if you are already invested in the Apple product ecosystem as the sync between multiple devices will be seamless.

3. Apple Watch SE

Apple Watch SE

Best All-round Performer

  • Apple S5 Chipset
  • Retina LTPO OLED display
  • Future Watch OS support
BUY FROM AMAZON

Pros

Robust build quality

Voice calling

Wireless charge support

Cons

No Blood Oxygen monitor and ECG

Apple needs no introduction, they are the biggest company when it comes to technology. Apple is known for being the trendsetters in the technological world.

With the recent launch of the Apple Watch Series 6, the company also launched the Apple Watch SE which is a more affordable smartwatch for those who want to get into the Apple ecosystem.

Build Quality and Design

In terms of the design, you won’t find the Apple Watch SE to look all that different from the Apple Watch Series 6. This is because the changes in the watch are not in its design but its internals.

The casing of the Apple Watch SE is made from aluminium which is beautifully crafted and feels quite premium in hand. On the right side of the square dial, you have a button and the crown which also doubles as another button.

This smartwatch features a sports band that is made of silicone and is comfortable to wear.

The Apple Watch SE is water-resistant for up to 50 meters which means you can wear your watch without worrying about damage from water.

Display

The Apple Watch SE features the same display tech as that of the flagship Series 6 Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch SE comes with a 1.78-inch Retina LTPO OLED panel with a resolution of 448 x 368 pixels.

Unlike the Series 6, the Apple Watch SE does not have an always-on display. But this is not a big trade-off per se.

This display has a peak brightness of 1000 nits which makes it easily visible outdoors, even under direct sunlight.

The display of the smartwatch has a screen-to-body ratio of 60%, which is impressive considering the compactness of the dial.

It is impossible to tell the difference between the OLED panels in the SE and Series 6 which is a good thing for those who are opting for the cheaper smartwatch.

Processor and Performance

As we mentioned earlier, the difference between the Series 6 and SE lies in its internals.

The Apple Watch SE runs on the older Apple S5 processor and not the latest Apple S6 processor found on the Series 6. This means that the watch is not as powerful as the Series 6 but that is not a problem considering it is still more powerful than most other smartwatches available in the Indian market.

For a lag-free experience, the Watch SE has 1GB RAM and you also have 32GB of internal memory to store applications.

The Apple Watch SE runs on the Watch OS 7 like the Apple Watch Series 6 and it is upgradable to Watch OS 7.3.

Features

The feature set of the Apple Watch SE is loaded but when compared to the Apple Watch Series 6, certain features are missing.

Let us look at some of the features that are missing from the Watch SE compared to Series 6.

The Apple Watch SE does have a heart rate sensor that monitors your heart rate 24×7 and this works fine but unfortunately, you do not have the Bloody Oxygen level and ECG sensor found in the Series 6.

The lack of a Blood Oxygen sensor can be a heavy hitter because in this era of the Corona pandemic where measurement of blood oxygen levels plays a vital role for those who have been affected.

The rest of the features in the Apple Watch SE are the same as the Series 6 such as fall detection, emergency SOS, GPS, etc.

Like all previous Apple Watches, the SE is compatible only with iPhones and not with Android devices.

The Apple Watch SE has a speaker and a mic that lets you make phone calls and you can even play video games or watch videos on the watch.

This smartwatch is available in both the cellular or non-cellular variant. The cellular variant lets you make phone calls even when your iPhone is not around.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch SE has a non-removable rechargeable battery that has a battery life of up to 18 hours. The battery life is decent and you will have to charge the watch daily.

To juice up the battery, there is the proprietary charger that comes bundled with the watch or you can also wirelessly charge the Apple Watch SE with any Qi Wireless charger.

Verdict

The Apple Watch SE is a perfect choice for someone who is already a part of the Apple ecosystem and has been hesitant to pay a premium price for their smartwatches.

Now you can enjoy the Apple Watch experience at almost half the price of their flagship Apple Watch Series 6.

Buying Guide for Smartwatch in India

Who would have thought that a watch on our wrists would be able to monitor our health 24×7 or we could speak to people around the world through a watch?

Smartwatches have brought a revolutionary change in the watch industry just like how the iPhone revolutionized the smartphone industry.

If you are reading this then it is likely that you are planning to purchase a smartwatch for yourself but are not sure about which is the right one for you.

We at Bettershark have prepared a short buying guide to give you an insight into some of the factors that you should consider before purchasing a smartwatch.

So without wasting any more time let’s get right into it.

CASING

The casing of the smartwatch is also known as its body or frame. The material used for the casing of the smartwatch is a very crucial factor in determining its durability in the long term.

Smartwatches come in polycarbonate, stainless steel, and aluminium casing. Stainless steel and aluminium casing are the more durable ones.

Polycarbonate casing is common in budget smartwatches. There is nothing wrong with going for a polycarbonate casing but it won’t provide the premium feel which we get from a stainless steel or aluminium casing.

DIAL

Smartwatches are available in two dial shapes – square, and circle. The shape of the dial in a smartwatch does not affect its performance and is purely an aesthetic choice.

If you prefer a more aggressive design for your smartwatch we recommend that you go for a square dial on the other hand if you prefer something more minimalistic then you should go for a circular dial.

STRAP

The strap of a smartwatch is also a really important feature that deserves attention.

Smartwatches primarily come with a silicone strap, however, these silicone straps are not recommended for those who have allergic reactions to synthetic rubber.

You can also find smartwatches that have leather straps or metal chains although they are not that common.

We recommend that you go for a smartwatch with detachable straps so that you can add a strap of your choice rather than permanently sticking to the straps provided by the manufacturer.

FEATURES

The main reason you would buy a smartwatch is to get access to its wide range of features.

Smartwatches come loaded with various sensors such as heart rate monitor, SPo2, accelerometer, gyroscope, IR blaster, etc.

The feature set of the smartwatch varies according to its budget. The more premium the smartwatch the more features it has, some smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch 3 are capable of performing ECG readings which is advanced and can inform you of any cardiac anomalies.

People who have cardiac issues tend to benefit from the health and fitness features that these smartwatches provide.

Another important function in a smartwatch is calling and texting. Calling is possible in most top-tier smartwatches and the same goes for texting.

Budget smartwatches generally do not get calling functionality, hence if you want the ability to attend calls from your smartwatch then you would have to pay a premium.

WATER RESISTANCE

It is recommended that you go for a smartwatch that is water-resistant because since a watch is worn at all times we never know when it might get drenched in water.

Smartwatches come with IP68 water resistance, 5ATM, and 3ATM water resistance.

According to Wikipedia IP68 is “dust and water-resistant” and can be “immersed in 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes”.

5ATM water resistance means that the watch can be submerged in water for under 50 meters and 3ATM water resistance means that the watch can be submerged in water for 30 meters both up to 10 minutes.

With this we have reached the end of our buying guide, make sure that you go through the above-mentioned factors and choose the smartwatch that has the features suiting your needs.
