HP products are exceptional in terms of performance. The company is known to offer laptops with good specifications and powerful performance under budget price segments.

The HP 14s comes with SSD storage and the latest generation intel chipset for buttery smooth performance under Rs.40,000.

Design and Build Quality

This mid-range laptop from HP uses decent quality plastic material for construction which reduces the weight of the machine.

That said, this laptop weighs just 1.47Kg making it an easy choice for those who carry their laptop around a lot.

The brushed finish on the lid and base looks robust. HP has not done any compromise on the aesthetics.

The opening of the lid is smooth and there is minimal flex on the lid.

The grill on the bottom side rejects the heat from the laptop to minimize processor throttling due to increased internal temperature.

Connectivity Features:

The HP 14s features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The HP 14s may be lightweight but in terms of performance, it punches way above its weight.

The HP 14s features an Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.1GHz.

With the 8GB DDR4 RAM onboard the laptop performs well without any hiccups. This laptop is also capable of handling light multi-tasking without any issues.

For a more buttery smooth multitasking performance, then you can expand the RAM further up to 16GB.

The 256GB SSD storage medium inside this laptop speeds up the boot and the app loading significantly, delivering a delightful computing experience for a budget under Rs.40,000.

Display

The HP 14s features a 14-inch FHD WLED-backlit anti-glare panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Colour reproduction on this panel is good for the price as the colours appear natural and vivid on this smaller panel.

Being a smaller panel also helps in having higher pixel density allowing for crisp and clean texts without any noticeable jagged edges.

Miscellaneous

The HP 14s comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Home OS.

The tenkeyless island-style jet black keyboard provides a smooth typing experience.

The keyboard is attractive in terms of design and the distance in between keys are optimal for comfortable typing.

The trackpad has a matte finish and the response on input is accurate.

Built-in front speakers deliver good audio quality but we’d always suggest you use earphones or headphones for even better sound output.

Battery Life

The HP 14s battery lasts up to five hours on a single charge and the supplied charger will juice up the battery in nearly 2 hours.

Verdict

This HP 14s laptop is the best for students looking for a budget laptop with exceptional everyday performance.

Cons

Non-backlit keyboard

Lenovo is a tough contender to the companies like Asus, Dell, and HP. This brand has been doing business in India for years now and it is majorly preferred by college students.

The Lenovo V15 model is not an entirely new product in their catalog; it features the same body as its predecessor model but the internals have changed and now it is loaded with Windows OS.

Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo V15 is built entirely from plastic which is no surprise as to provide more features the company has to cut down the cost at any point.

But don’t worry the plastic used for the construction of this laptop is durable, though you do find some flex but, it is normal.

The lid has smooth matte finishing which looks pleasing to the eyes. .

Weighing at 1.7Kg, the Lenovo V15 is easy to carry around and for a 15-inch laptop, this is perfectly alright.

The lid open/close operation is smooth, thanks to the hinge mechanism but the lid does wobble a bit under the speedy ceiling fan.

This laptop has air intake vents at the bottom side of the chassis and the exhaust air is expelled through the rear side keeping the internal temperature under check.

Connectivity Features:

The Lenovo V15 features the following I/O ports:

  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x USB 3.2 port
  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • RJ-45 LAN port
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Display

The Lenovo V15 sports a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare TN panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This display has thin bezels on the sides which offers an immersive wide viewing experience with content consumption.

The quality of the display justifies its price – this panel produces crisp and clear visuals with vivid colours.

However, it is not an IPS panel so the viewing angles are not good but in exchange, you do get an anti-glare coating. It will minimise the reflections from the screen and reduce the stress on your eyes.

Processor and Performance

The Lenovo V15 is powered by the Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo clock speed of 4.1GHz.

This CPU paired with the 4GB DDR4 RAM clocked at 3200MHz provides a decent day to day performance.

To unlock more potential of the machine there is another slot for expanding the RAM up to 12GB.

Expanding the RAM will help you juggle more tasks at once without facing much lag or stutters.

The 256GB SSD works like an add-on booster to the performance. It offers lightning fast data transfer speeds resulting in quicker application loading and system boot times.

The Intel UHD graphics assists the CPU to execute resourceful graphical tasks but don’t expect to run AAA title games on this machine.

Miscellaneous

The Lenovo V15 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home operating system. You will also get a licensed copy of MS Office home and student 2019 for free and you can access full features of word, excel, and powerpoint without paying an extra dime.

The full-sized non-backlit keyboard on the C deck has curved-shaped keys which we have seen in the other laptop from Lenovo.cThis keyboard provides nice clicky feedback and is excellent for typing.

The webcam positioned at the top chin of the display features a privacy shutter so if you are concerned about your privacy, you can physically close the shutter when not in use.

The trackpad supports multi-finger gestures and you will also get plenty of space to land your palm.

Battery Life

The Lenovo V15 is powered by the 38Wh lithium battery which lasts up to 4-5 hours of regular use on a full charge.

The bundled 65W adapter takes almost 2 – 2:15 hours to juice up the battery fully from 0 – 100%.

Verdict

The Lenovo V15 is not a new series but the one you see here is just released with the latest hardware and it provides a good performance as well as a lifetime license of MS Office 2019.

For a budget undee Rs.40,000, this laptop has almost everything an entry-level user can ask for.

Cons

Outdated design

Dell is a well-known brand with years of expertise in the desktop and laptop market all around the world.

Dell Inspiron 3501 is a decent looking budget performance-oriented laptop priced at Rs.38,390.

Design and Build Quality

Dell sure has upgraded the internals from its predecessor Inspiron model but the outer body still looks outdated.

The chassis is solely made out of plastic but the build quality does not seem cheap in hands.

The lid surface and C-deck have smooth flat finishing and the Dell logo stamped in the center of the lid gives this machine a decent look.

If you don’t mind the aesthetics then it is not a deal-breaker for you.

Despite being a notebook laptop, it weighs 1.83Kg which we guess is acceptable considering its 15-inch form factor.

This laptop has dual bottom-firing speakers and to be honest, the audio quality is not that pleasant and we do suggest using a pair of good earphones/headphones for a better surround sound experience.

A medium-size rectangular-shaped grille is provided at the bottom side of the unit for the air intake and the heat dissipation is done through the rear side vents.

Connectivity Features:

The Dell Inspiron 3501 features the following I/O ports:

  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • RJ-45 LAN port
  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • MicroSD card reader

Processor and Performance

The Dell Inspiron 3501 is equipped with the latest CPU from Intel that is an i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo clock frequency of 4.1GHz.

This CPU coupled with the 4GB DDR4 RAM offers good performance on a day to day usage. You can expand the RAM up to 16GB if you seek a smooth multitasking performance.

The 256GB SSD will help boost the laptop performance by speeding up the process of system boot up and application loading.

From a storage perspective it might not be sufficient for everyone but if you want a fast-paced machine at this price then going with the SSD is the wisest choice.

As for the GPU, the laptop comes with Intel UHD graphics that assist the CPU to handle graphics-related tasks.

Display

The Dell Inspiron 3501 features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This display has a chunky bottom chin and the bezels from the other three sides are medium-sized. You might not get the best experience with content viewing but for work purposes it’s fine.

The panel is fairly bright and while indoor you will not face any kind of issue.

This display has decent colour reproduction and the viewing angles are good up to 80-degrees after that you will notice colour shifting.

The anti-glare coating on the display will block the light reflection and also helps you reduce eye strain.

Miscellaneous

The Dell Inspiron 3501 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The full-sized keyboard on the deck offers a decent typing experience and since it has a dedicated number pad it will be much easier for users to enter numeric data.

The trackpad is positioned a bit left from the center but is easily accessible and it supports multi-finger gestures.

The webcam on the display top chin offers decent video quality.

Battery Life

The Dell Inspiron 3501 is powered by the 3-cell 42Wh lithium battery that is rated to last up to 4-5 hours on a full charge.

The bundled 65W adapter will recharge the battery levels from 0 – 100% in 2 to 2:15 hours.

Verdict

The Dell Inspiron 3501 offers a good performance for its asking price but the aesthetics of the laptop are not good.

If you are looking for a laptop that can handle your everyday workload then buying this machine is ideal,

Design and Build Quality

The HP 15s looks exactly similar to the HP 14s but with a slightly bigger form factor.

The outer body of the HP 15s is constructed from plastic materials but the quality of the build is not compromised here.

With its 15-inch form factor and the hardware assembled inside, this laptop weighs 1.69Kg which is pretty fair.

The upward-firing speakers on this laptop provide average sound output quality, enough to fill a small-sized room.

The hinge mechanism is robust and has enough friction to keep the display lid from wobbling too much while under a ceiling fan.

Connectivity Features:

The HP 15s features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader

Speaking of storage, the HP 15s comes equipped with 256GB SSD inside. This SSD delivers exceptional read/write speeds resulting in an impressive performance.

The HP 15s is strictly a productivity laptop and is not suited for gaming in any way.

Display

The HP 15s features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The colours look bright and vivid, so does the dynamic range. Be it for productivity tasks or media consumption, this panel delivers a decent experience.

With a peak brightness of 250 nits, the HP 15s is adequately bright enough for indoor use, even under bright artificial lights.

The anti-glare coating on the display minimises light reflections, thereby reducing the strain on your eyes.

Miscellaneous

The HP 15s comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. As an added benefit, it also has pre-installed MS Office home and student 2019. This is a licenced version of MS Office 2019 which you can use for a lifetime.

The full-sized keyboard does not have a backlit underneath which limits the work in low light conditions but the keys are spaced well and have decent key travel which results in a good typing experience.

The asymmetrically positioned trackpad supports the multi-finger gestures and there is an ample amount of space on the C deck to rest your palm.

The HP true vision HD webcam at the center of the top display chin provides acceptable video quality with online classes and video conferencing while sitting in a room that has sufficient lighting.

Battery Life

The HP 15s is powered by the 3-cell 41Wh lithium-polymer battery that will provide the power backup for up to 5 hours on moderate to heavy use.

The bundled 45W AC adapter takes almost 2:30 hours to recharge the battery levels from 0 -100%.

Verdict

The HP 15s can be considered as the big brother of the HP 14s with a bigger screen and higher capacity SSD storage for roughly the same price.

The bezels around the display are minimal, providing an immersive media consumption experience.

Dell Vostro 3401 is a powerful entry-level laptop with good performance priced under Rs.40,000.

Design and Build Quality

The exterior of the Dell Vostro 3491 is constructed from high-quality plastic materials and the build does not feel cheap by any means.

The lid has a textured finish and there is a logo of Dell plastered on the center which helps further enhancing the look of the laptop.

The Vostro 3401 is a 14-inch laptop and weighs 1.58Kg only even after having dual storage because we have seen many laptops with the same form factor that weigh almost close to 2Kg.

To keep the internal temperatures in check, the laptop has an air intake grill located at the bottom side and the heat dissipation is carried out through the rear side ventilation.

Connectivity Features:

The Dell Vostro 3491 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x HDMI port

The onboard 4GB DDR4 RAM rated at 2666MHz provides smooth performance with everyday applications such as chrome browser, Youtube, and MS Office.

Dell has also provided an extra slot for the storage expansion where you can add one extra stick of RAM to get more buttery smooth performance on multitasking.

Furthermore, the laptop comes with a 256GB M.2 PCIe Nvme SSD that boots up the system in seconds, and app loading time is also significantly reduced.

This panel has thin side bezels which gives an immersive visual experience while viewing media content.

The peak brightness level of 220 nits is decent enough for indoor usage and the colour reproduction from this panel is quite okay for the asking price.

The anti-glare layer applied on the display blocks unnecessary light reflections and reduces the stress on the eyes.

Miscellaneous

The Dell Vostro 3401 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. And as a cherry on top, the company has provided MS Office Home/Student 2019 as well.

Since it’s a 14-inch laptop, you surely miss the numeric keyboard and the given tenkeyless keyboard has no LED backlight.

The typing experience is good as the keys are spaced well and the travel distance is ample.

The HD webcam at the front center on the top chin gives decent video quality under good lighting conditions.

The trackpad on this laptop supports multi-finger gestures, and since the trackpad is positioned in the center, you have sufficient space for the palm rest.

10. AVITA Essential Refresh

AVITA Essential Refresh
Honourable Mention
  • Good everyday performance
  • SSD storage
  • Lightweight and compact
BUY FROM AMAZON

Pros

Full HD thin-bezel display

Spacious trackpad

Gorgeous looks with fabric material

Cons

No RJ-45 LAN port

Avita is a Hong Kong-based affordable laptop manufacturer which recently debuted in the Indian market, targeting entry-level and mid-range laptops consumers.

The Avita Essential Refresh is the entry-level laptop from Avita targeted at students, for whom the price tag of just Rs.22,695 will be an irresistible deal.

Design and Build Quality

The build quality of the Avita Essential Refresh is the same as its predecessor model which is Avita Essential 14 and to be honest, it’s hard to differentiate between the two machines.

They look almost identical and to tell the difference you will have to browse through the spec sheet on the paper.

The plastic and fabric material used for the construction gives this laptop a distinctive look and it’s very rare to see a fabric finish on a laptop in this price segment.

Thanks to its 14-inch form factor, this laptop weighs only 1.37Kg and fits perfectly inside the regular backpack.

What surprises us the most is that we didn’t find any heat exhaust vents on this machine so we are wondering about the machine’s thermal performance.

Apart from this, the Avita Essential Refresh has eye-catching aesthetics and the build quality is reliable for most use cases.

Connectivity Features:

The Avita Essential Refresh features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

All ports are provided on the rear side of the laptop.

Processor and Performance

The processor inside this laptop is the Intel Celeron N4020 dual-core processor with a base clock speed of 1.1GHz and its turbo boost frequency of 2.8GHz.

Next is the storage – instead of 128GB they’ve doubled the size and the new model comes with the 256GB SSD.

This SSD will help the laptop perform better by booting up the OS quickly and also reduce the application loading time.

We were expecting a change in RAM as well but guess it may be the next time. This laptop has 4GB DDR4 RAM that is adequate for casual everyday usage.

Display

The Avita Essential Refresh features a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare panel with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This is one of the winning factors that Avita had up its sleeves. This high-resolution display offers a crisp and clear visual quality and it even allows you to play youtube videos in 2K quality.

Unlike other laptops, this Avita laptop has the slimmest bezel with the size of 4mm offering an incredible immersive wide viewing experience on media consumption.

The anti-glare coating minimises light reflection so you can see the visuals clearly and it will also reduce the strain on your eyes.

Miscellaneous

The Avita Essential Refresh comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The tenkeyless keyboard on the deck does not feature LED backlighting. The keys on the keyboard feel mushy.

The rectangular-shaped trackpad is quite not convenient for use but it recognises the gestures like a charm.

The bezels are so small that the brand has to shift the placement of the webcam and the newly assigned position is slightly above the keyboard deck.

This angular positioned webcam makes you look a bit awful on other screens and if you are buying this laptop for video conferencing then do invest extra in a portable webcam.

Battery Life

This laptop is powered by a 23.68Wh lithium battery that is rated to last 3-4 hours on a single charge.

With the bundled charger, the Avita Essential Refresh charges up in 2 hours from zero to a hundred per cent.

Verdict

The Avita Essential Refresh is one of the best affordable netbooks that you can get your hands on for under Rs.23,000.

The decent FHD display and the SSD storage make it a wise choice for those who are looking for a feature-rich, dirt-cheap laptop.

Solid State Drive – Things You Should Know About

Solid State Drive (SSD) is a new generation of storage medium used in electronic peripherals as a replacement to the conventional hard disk drives.

Advantages of SSD

  • Having an SSD on the laptop means your system boots up significantly faster than a laptop running on HDD/
  • Operating systems/programs installed on the SSD loads quickly.
  • Since this storage drive has no moving parts it works silently and is shock-resistant; moreover, it consumes less power, therefore the laptop battery will last longer.
  • SSD generates less heat which means it’s good for long-term use and is reliable.

Types of SSD

There are generally 2 types of SSD available in the market

  • SATA SSD
  • Nvme SSD

SATA SSD

The SATA looks more like an HDD but has a low thickness and has no rotating part inside it.

A SATA SSD has a minimum read and write speed of 500MB/s which is almost five times faster than the hard drive.

A SATA drive is good for casual and light users, also, it is cheaper compared to the Nvme SSDs.

Nvme SSD

The Nvme(Non-volatile memory express) drive has more than 1.5GB/s read and write speed that results in a faster system boot up and the programs installed on this SSD loads much quicker.

This type of SSD looks similar to the RAM stick – it contains microcontrollers that consume less power and it works much faster than the SATA drives.

M.2

The M.2 is usually determined after the SSD storage type, the M.2 is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors.

An M.2 SSD is tremendously fast and it helps to reduce the size of the SSD.

When the laptop motherboard does not have the M.2 connector then the Nvme SSD is connected via PCIe(peripheral component interconnect express) card that has M.2 connector, that’s why many laptop companies described the SSD as PCIe Nvme M.2 SSD.

Read and Write Speed in SSD

Read/write speeds indicates the performance of a storage device. The read speed refers to how much time it takes to open a file from the device, and the write speed shows how long it takes to save a file to the device.

  1. Hi ,
    Very informative content.Loved it!

I am looking for a laptop which costs around 40k with an SSD.And this is the first time I’m buying a laptop.I’ve read your recommendations and out of the 10 laptops I am thinking to go with the Honor MagicBook 15.’cause I really like it.Especially its design.

But I’m concerned that if it’s lack of hardware upgradability will be an issue in the future.

I’m a degree 1st year cs student. This laptop is mainly for programming and web surfing. And I need to use it atleast for 4 years. And I really don’t wanna make any mistakes ‘that could have been avoidable’.

So Sir,what do you think? Is Honor a good choice?
Is 8 GB DDR4 RAM enough for programming ?
    Any suggestions ?
    Looking forward for your reply.

    • Hi Faris!

We personally use Honor Magicbook 15 (Link – http://fkrt.it/Q2MVtSNNNN) in our office and are quite satisfied with its performance till date. We use this laptop for occasional graphics and web design works along with casual web browsing and is yet to encounter a lag or stutter in between. The 8GB RAM inside is not expandable but it is adequate enough for use cases such as programming, media consumption and light multitasking, thanks partly to the AMD Ryzen 5 CPU inside.

With the aluminum chassis construction, the build quality feels durable and sturdy and will last you easily for years if used carefully. One main gripe we have with this machine is the lack of a backlit keyboard, which would have made this laptop a perfect 10/10 recommendation. We would also suggest you to go through our individual review of this laptop here – Honor Magic Book 15 review.

      • Thanks for the detailed reply.really appreciate it.
But it looks like Honor Laptop is out of stock in near shops as well as in flipkart and amazon.
So Can you suggest me a viable alternative for Honor in this price range?

      • Hi Faris!

You can check out the Mi Notebook 14 (Link – https://amzn.to/2LP8cF2) priced at Rs.43,999 which is almost similar to the Honor Magic book 15 in terms of build quality and performance. One main differentiating factor between these two laptops are the processors inside. The Mi Notebook 14, instead of the AMD Ryzen 5 has a quad-core Intel tenth generation i5-10210U on board. Performance wise, both these laptops performs the same. If you are not strict with budget, we’d also recommend you to check out the newer Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (Link – https://amzn.to/39zBPSG) with the latest fourth generation Ryzen 5 onboard priced at Rs.49,990.

  2. Dear Bettershark,

I need a laptop, mostly for office work that involves MS office, email writing, printing / scanning docs, internet reading / watching videos, online meetings, basic storage of just 512gb.

But what I really need is a laptop with fast booting [I don’t know if SSD is what does that trick], light weight. It needs to have Windows and MS office pre-installed. Ethernet / LAN port is a must. Build quality needs to be robust. Could you suggest me a cost effective laptop for these requirements?

    • Hi Gopalakrishnan!

You’re right. SSD storage makes a laptop boot faster and load apps quickly from the memory without any delays.

We’d suggest you to check out the HP 15s laptop that features a 512GB SSD storage and a powerful tenth generation Intel Core i5 processor that can carry out tasks you mentioned without breaking a sweat. And the RJ 45 Ethernet/LAN port is hard to come by in modern day laptops but luckily this device has one. Although this laptop is priced at Rs.49,990, we’d say it is well worth as it comes with a fully licensed copy of MS Office 2019 out of the box, which if brought separately would set you anywhere from 7-10k extra.
