Limited I/O ports

Realme is a well-known brand in the smartphone industry and the company has recently extended its portfolio in laptops by launching its first product in the Indian market – Realme Book.

The Realme Book is being touted as a fierce rival to the Redmi Notebook series from Xiaomi. Is it a worthy opponent? Let’s find out!

Design and Build Quality

From top to bottom, the chassis of this laptop is made out of aluminium and it has a gray colour paint job finish which makes it look premium.

Realme has tried to keep the design minimalistic so that the laptop will look simple yet aesthetically pleasing.

Weighing at just 1.38Kg, it’s a pleasure to carry this device around.

The robust hinge mechanism ensures that the lid won’t wobble when you place the machine under a high-speed ceiling fan.

This machine has dual fans inside that helps to keep the internal temperature under check even under heavier loads.

Connectivity Features:

The realme Book features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB-C ports
  • 1 x USB 3.1 port
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The CPU inside the realme Book is the latest Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo clock speed of 4.1GHz.

Usually, laptops under Rs.50,000 have RAM clocked at 3200Mhz or below but this one has 8GB of DDR4 RAM clocked at 3733MHz.

The higher clock frequency of hardware allows it to process the tasks much faster and efficiently and multitasking performance will be a breeze on this one.

The 256GB SSD inside takes less power to operate and delivers better performance. It will provide near-instantaneous system boot up and programs will load at a much faster rate.

The Intel UHD graphics assist the CPU to deal with the resourceful graphical task.

Display

This is where realme book leaves its competitors far behind.

The realme Book sports a 14-inch Quad HD IPS display with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels. No, we are not mistaken it’s the truth that you are getting to experience a 2K display under the price of Rs.50,000.

The quality of visuals is so sharp and one more thing to add, that panel has 100% of sRGB which means the picture and text appears sharp and clean.

However, the display has a 3:2 aspect ratio so it will be taller and less wide which might not be good for media consumption but your taste might differ.

For work purposes, this is a perfect display. Thanks to the IPS technology, there is no colour shifting when you view the panel from an angle.

Miscellaneous

The realme Book comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS and the good news is that brand has already announced that in the future, this laptop will get the Windows 11 update for free.

The tenkeyless backlit keyboard has a key travel distance of 1.3mm. It provides soft and silent typing feedback so if you like noise-free typing then this keyboard is just right for you.

The backlit underneath the keyboard will let you do work efficiently in low light environments.

The trackpad is positioned in the center and it registers the multi-finger gestures precisely. The power button doubles up as a fingerprint scanner for one-touch login.

Battery Life

The realme Book is powered by a 54Wh lithium battery and it will easily provide backup for

up to 6 hours on a full charge.

The bundled 65W USB-C power adapter supports fast charging technology and it juices up the battery from 0 – 50% in just 30 minutes.

Verdict

The realme Book is just a perfect compact and lightweight notebook laptop for students and working professionals.

It is completely feature-packed and for a price under Rs.45,000, you will not get any better deal than this one.

2. RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition

RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition

Runner-up Pick

  • Latest 11th gen Intel processor
  • Decent battery life
  • FHD panel with anti-glare coating
BUY FROM FLIPKART

Pros

Decent 720p webcam

Eligible for Windows 11 OS upgrade

Acceptable build quality

Cons

Non-backlit keyboard

RedmiBook series can be considered as an upgrade to the Mi notebook laptops which was one of the first laptops from Xiaomi to launch in the Indian market and the RedmiBook continues the legacy.

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition is aimed at students and is currently priced at Rs.41,999 for the Indian market.

Design and Build Quality

Like its predecessor model, the RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition does not come with a metal chassis, instead, the brand has used polycarbonate materials for the construction.

We’d say the build quality is okay for the price. You will get a smooth brushed metallic finish on the lid and there is also the minimalistic Redmi branding.

The hinge mechanism is of robust quality – you can lift the lid using a single hand, which is quite surprising at this price point.

Weighing at 1.8Kg, this laptop might feel slightly heavy on the shoulders when carrying it inside a backpack.

The grille at the bottom side has a bit larger cut-out compared to what we see on other laptops. It is good as it allows more air to travel at once and the internal components will remain cool.

Connectivity Features:

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • 1 x RJ-45 LAN port
  • SD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition is powered by the Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo clock speed of 4.1GHz.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM clocked at 3200MHz is soldered on the motherboard and is not upgradable but for students, it is more than sufficient to do their everyday tasks and multitasking.

This machine includes a 256GB SATA SSD which is still better than the HDD. It will boot up the system quickly and application loading time will be minimal.

The integrated Intel UHD graphics provides decent performance and you can expect to play some casual games on this machine.

Display

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The bezels around the display on this machine are comparatively thicker than the Mi notebook. The top chin is acceptable because now you don’t have to buy an extra webcam but they should have cut out the side bezels a bit more.

This display has decent colour reproduction and you will see that the visuals on this panel are sharp and colourful.

Redmi has taken measures on students’ safety as well. The anti-glare coating will reduce the eye strain and block the light reflection so you can view the display visuals.

Miscellaneous

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS and the company has confirmed that you will get the Windows 11 OS update in the future.

The tenkeyless non-backlit scissor-switch keyboard on the deck has 1.5mm of key travel and the response on the keypress is good.

The trackpad is positioned in the center and it supports multi-finger gestures like a champ. Unfortunately, this laptop does not feature a fingerprint scanner which is disappointing.

As we said, you don’t need an extra webcam anymore as there is a 720p webcam on the top chin of the display that offers a decent video quality under good lighting conditions.

Battery Life

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition is powered by a 46Wh lithium battery and the company has said that it will provide up to 10 hours of backup but that’s not a fact and never will be.

Expect this battery to last up to 5 hours on moderate to heavy use and you can use the 65W bundled power adapter to juice up the battery quite fast.

Verdict

The RedmiBook 15 e-Learning Edition is just perfect for students for the price of Rs.41,999.

The laptop has almost everything a student needs. It can be used for completing projects, class assignments, or for attending an online class.

BUY FROM AMAZON

Pros

Decent battery life

Genuine Windows 10 Home OS

Full-sized keyboard

Cons

Outdated design

Dell is a well-known brand with years of expertise in the desktop and laptop market all around the world.

Dell Inspiron 3501 is a decent looking budget performance-oriented laptop priced at Rs.38,390.

Design and Build Quality

Dell sure has upgraded the internals from its predecessor Inspiron model but the outer body still looks outdated.

The chassis is solely made out of plastic but the build quality does not seem cheap in hands.

The lid surface and C-deck have smooth flat finishing and the Dell logo stamped in the center of the lid gives this machine a decent look.

If you don’t mind the aesthetics then it is not a deal-breaker for you.

Despite being a notebook laptop, it weighs 1.83Kg which we guess is acceptable considering its 15-inch form factor.

This laptop has dual bottom-firing speakers and to be honest, the audio quality is not that pleasant and we do suggest using a pair of good earphones/headphones for a better surround sound experience.

A medium-size rectangular-shaped grille is provided at the bottom side of the unit for the air intake and the heat dissipation is done through the rear side vents.

Connectivity Features:

The Dell Inspiron 3501 features the following I/O ports:

  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • RJ-45 LAN port
  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • MicroSD card reader

Processor and Performance

The Dell Inspiron 3501 is equipped with the latest CPU from Intel that is an i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo clock frequency of 4.1GHz.

This CPU coupled with the 4GB DDR4 RAM offers good performance on a day to day usage. You can expand the RAM up to 16GB if you seek a smooth multitasking performance.

The 256GB SSD will help boost the laptop performance by speeding up the process of system boot up and application loading.

From a storage perspective it might not be sufficient for everyone but if you want a fast-paced machine at this price then going with the SSD is the wisest choice.

As for the GPU, the laptop comes with Intel UHD graphics that assist the CPU to handle graphics-related tasks.

Display

The Dell Inspiron 3501 features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This display has a chunky bottom chin and the bezels from the other three sides are medium-sized. You might not get the best experience with content viewing but for work purposes it’s fine.

The panel is fairly bright and while indoor you will not face any kind of issue.

This display has decent colour reproduction and the viewing angles are good up to 80-degrees after that you will notice colour shifting.

The anti-glare coating on the display will block the light reflection and also helps you reduce eye strain.

Miscellaneous

The Dell Inspiron 3501 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The full-sized keyboard on the deck offers a decent typing experience and since it has a dedicated number pad it will be much easier for users to enter numeric data.

The trackpad is positioned a bit left from the center but is easily accessible and it supports multi-finger gestures.

The webcam on the display top chin offers decent video quality.

Battery Life

The Dell Inspiron 3501 is powered by the 3-cell 42Wh lithium battery that is rated to last up to 4-5 hours on a full charge.

The bundled 65W adapter will recharge the battery levels from 0 – 100% in 2 to 2:15 hours.

Verdict

The Dell Inspiron 3501 offers a good performance for its asking price but the aesthetics of the laptop are not good.

If you are looking for a laptop that can handle your everyday workload then buying this machine is ideal,

HP is a California-based company that has a very loyal customer base here in the Indian subcontinent.

The HP 15s is a mid-range office laptop with decent internals and smooth performance for a budget of just under Rs.40,000.

Design and Build Quality

The HP 15s looks exactly similar to the HP 14s but with a slightly bigger form factor.

The outer body of the HP 15s is constructed from plastic materials but the quality of the build is not compromised here.

With its 15-inch form factor and the hardware assembled inside, this laptop weighs 1.69Kg which is pretty fair.

The upward-firing speakers on this laptop provide average sound output quality, enough to fill a small-sized room.

The hinge mechanism is robust and has enough friction to keep the display lid from wobbling too much while under a ceiling fan.

Connectivity Features:

The HP 15s features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader

Speaking of storage, the HP 15s comes equipped with a 256GB SSD inside. This SSD delivers exceptional read/write speeds resulting in an impressive performance.

The HP 15s is strictly a productivity laptop and is not suited for gaming in any way.

Display

The HP 15s features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The colours look bright and vivid, so does the dynamic range. Be it for productivity tasks or media consumption, this panel delivers a decent experience.

With a peak brightness of 220 nits, the HP 15s is adequately bright enough for indoor use, even under bright artificial lights.

The anti-glare coating on the display minimises light reflections, thereby reducing the strain on your eyes.

Miscellaneous

The HP 15s comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. As an added benefit, it also has pre-installed MS Office home and student 2019. This is a licensed version of MS Office 2019 which you can use for a lifetime.

The full-sized keyboard does not have a backlit underneath which limits the work in low light conditions but the keys are spaced well and have decent key travel which results in a good typing experience.

The asymmetrically positioned trackpad supports the multi-finger gestures and there is an ample amount of space on the C deck to rest your palm.

The HP true vision HD webcam at the center of the top display chin provides acceptable video quality with online classes and video conferencing while sitting in a room that has sufficient lighting.

Battery Life

The HP 15s is powered by the 3-cell 41Wh lithium-polymer battery that will provide the power backup for up to 5 hours on moderate to heavy use.

The bundled 65W AC adapter takes almost 2:30 hours to recharge the battery levels from 0 -100%.

Verdict

The HP 15s can be considered as the big brother of the HP 14s with a bigger screen and higher capacity SSD storage for roughly the same price.

The bezels around the display are minimal, providing an immersive media consumption experience.

Avita is a Hong Kong-based affordable laptop manufacturer which recently debuted in the Indian market, targeting entry-level and mid-range laptops consumers.

The Avita Essential Refresh is the entry-level laptop from Avita targeted at students, for whom the price tag of just Rs.22,695 will be an irresistible deal.

Design and Build Quality

The build quality of the Avita Essential Refresh is the same as its predecessor model which is Avita Essential 14 and to be honest, it’s hard to differentiate between the two machines.

They look almost identical and to tell the difference you will have to browse through the spec sheet on the paper.

The plastic and fabric material used for the construction gives this laptop a distinctive look and it’s very rare to see a fabric finish on a laptop in this price segment.

Thanks to its 14-inch form factor, this laptop weighs only 1.37Kg and fits perfectly inside the regular backpack.

What surprises us the most is that we didn’t find any heat exhaust vents on this machine so we are wondering about the machine’s thermal performance.

Apart from this, the Avita Essential Refresh has eye-catching aesthetics and the build quality is reliable for most use cases.

Connectivity Features:

The Avita Essential Refresh features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

All ports are provided on the rear side of the laptop.

Processor and Performance

The processor inside this laptop is the Intel Celeron N4020 dual-core processor with a base clock speed of 1.1GHz and its turbo boost frequency of 2.8GHz.

Next is the storage – instead of 128GB they’ve doubled the size and the new model comes with the 256GB SSD.

This SSD will help the laptop perform better by booting up the OS quickly and also reduce the application loading time.

We were expecting a change in RAM as well but guess it may be the next time. This laptop has 4GB DDR4 RAM that is adequate for casual everyday usage.

Display

The Avita Essential Refresh features a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare panel with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This is one of the winning factors that Avita had up its sleeves. This high-resolution display offers a crisp and clear visual quality and it even allows you to play youtube videos in 2K quality.

Unlike other laptops, this Avita laptop has the slimmest bezel with the size of 4mm offering an incredible immersive wide viewing experience on media consumption.

The anti-glare coating minimises light reflection so you can see the visuals clearly and it will also reduce the strain on your eyes.

Miscellaneous

The Avita Essential Refresh comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The tenkeyless keyboard on the deck does not feature LED backlighting. The keys on the keyboard feel mushy.

The rectangular-shaped trackpad is quite not convenient for use but it recognises the gestures like a charm.

The bezels are so small that the brand has to shift the placement of the webcam and the newly assigned position is slightly above the keyboard deck.

This angular positioned webcam makes you look a bit awful on other screens and if you are buying this laptop for video conferencing then do invest extra in a portable webcam.

Battery Life

This laptop is powered by a 23.68Wh lithium battery that is rated to last 3-4 hours on a single charge.

With the bundled charger, the Avita Essential Refresh charges up in 2 hours from zero to a hundred per cent.

Verdict

The Avita Essential Refresh is one of the best affordable netbooks that you can get your hands on for under Rs.23,000.

The decent FHD display and the SSD storage make it a wise choice for those who are looking for a feature-rich, dirt-cheap laptop.

  1. Hi ,
    Very informative content.Loved it!

I am looking for a laptop which costs around 40k with an SSD.And this is the first time I’m buying a laptop.I’ve read your recommendations and out of the 10 laptops I am thinking to go with the Honor MagicBook 15.’cause I really like it.Especially its design.

But I’m concerned that if it’s lack of hardware upgradability will be an issue in the future.

I’m a degree 1st year cs student. This laptop is mainly for programming and web surfing. And I need to use it atleast for 4 years. And I really don’t wanna make any mistakes ‘that could have been avoidable’.

So Sir,what do you think? Is Honor a good choice?
Is 8 GB DDR4 RAM enough for programming ?
    Any suggestions ?
    Looking forward for your reply.

    • Hi Faris!

We personally use Honor Magicbook 15 (Link – http://fkrt.it/Q2MVtSNNNN) in our office and are quite satisfied with its performance till date. We use this laptop for occasional graphics and web design works along with casual web browsing and is yet to encounter a lag or stutter in between. The 8GB RAM inside is not expandable but it is adequate enough for use cases such as programming, media consumption and light multitasking, thanks partly to the AMD Ryzen 5 CPU inside.

With the aluminum chassis construction, the build quality feels durable and sturdy and will last you easily for years if used carefully. One main gripe we have with this machine is the lack of a backlit keyboard, which would have made this laptop a perfect 10/10 recommendation. We would also suggest you to go through our individual review of this laptop here – Honor Magic Book 15 review.

      • Thanks for the detailed reply.really appreciate it.
But it looks like Honor Laptop is out of stock in near shops as well as in flipkart and amazon.
So Can you suggest me a viable alternative for Honor in this price range?

      • Hi Faris!

You can check out the Mi Notebook 14 (Link – https://amzn.to/2LP8cF2) priced at Rs.43,999 which is almost similar to the Honor Magic book 15 in terms of build quality and performance. One main differentiating factor between these two laptops are the processors inside. The Mi Notebook 14, instead of the AMD Ryzen 5 has a quad-core Intel tenth generation i5-10210U on board. Performance wise, both these laptops performs the same. If you are not strict with budget, we’d also recommend you to check out the newer Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (Link – https://amzn.to/39zBPSG) with the latest fourth generation Ryzen 5 onboard priced at Rs.49,990.

  2. Dear Bettershark,

I need a laptop, mostly for office work that involves MS office, email writing, printing / scanning docs, internet reading / watching videos, online meetings, basic storage of just 512gb.

But what I really need is a laptop with fast booting [I don’t know if SSD is what does that trick], light weight. It needs to have Windows and MS office pre-installed. Ethernet / LAN port is a must. Build quality needs to be robust. Could you suggest me a cost effective laptop for these requirements?

    • Hi Gopalakrishnan!

You’re right. SSD storage makes a laptop boot faster and load apps quickly from the memory without any delays.

We’d suggest you to check out the HP 15s laptop that features a 512GB SSD storage and a powerful tenth generation Intel Core i5 processor that can carry out tasks you mentioned without breaking a sweat. And the RJ 45 Ethernet/LAN port is hard to come by in modern day laptops but luckily this device has one. Although this laptop is priced at Rs.49,990, we’d say it is well worth as it comes with a fully licensed copy of MS Office 2019 out of the box, which if brought separately would set you anywhere from 7-10k extra.
