The upward-firing speakers on this laptop provide average sound output quality, enough to fill a small-sized room.

Display

The HP 15s features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The colours look bright and vivid, so does the dynamic range. Be it for productivity tasks or media consumption, this panel delivers a decent experience.

With a peak brightness of 250 nits, the HP 15s is adequately bright enough for indoor use, even under bright artificial lights.

The anti-glare coating on the display minimises light reflections, thereby reducing the strain on your eyes.

Miscellaneous

The HP 15s comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. As an added benefit, it also has pre-installed MS Office home and student 2019. This is a licenced version of MS Office 2019 which you can use for a lifetime.

The full-sized keyboard does not have a backlit underneath which limits the work in low light conditions but the keys are spaced well and have decent key travel which results in a good typing experience.

The asymmetrically positioned trackpad supports the multi-finger gestures and there is an ample amount of space on the C deck to rest your palm.

The Acer Aspire 5 features a 256GB SSD storage that boots the operating system swiftly and with its faster read and write capabilities you can transfer data at higher speeds.

Speaking of graphics, the Acer Aspire 5 is loaded with integrated Intel UHD graphics. This won’t let you do gaming anyway but complements the CPU well when it comes to the overall graphics handling.

Display

The Acer Aspire 5 features a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The bezels around the display are minimal, providing an immersive media consumption experience.

The anti-glare coating will be useful to those who work for hours in front of their laptop. It reduces stress on your eyes by minimising the light reflectivity.

No Windows OS

HP has finally upgraded its budget G-series laptop after almost one and a half years and we guess the wait is worth it.

The HP 250 G8 is a DOS-based laptop featuring the latest Intel processor priced at Rs.34,990.

Design and Build Quality

The HP 250 G8 features the same aesthetics from its predecessor models and to be honest, this machine does look a bit dated compared to the latest models of Asus and Lenovo.

The textured finish on the top cover with an adoring HP logo in the center gives this laptop an industrial look.

This 15-inch machine weighs 1.74Kg and considering its form factor the weight is acceptable and portability will not be an issue.

The hinge mechanism provides enough friction to open and close the lid without any issues. Also, the display lid stays firmly in place even when the laptop is placed under a ceiling fan.

As for the thermals, the fan inside does not go on a rampage until you process too many tasks at once.

Connectivity Features:

  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port

The 256GB SSD inside provides excellent performance with its tremendous read and write speed. The system boot-up time is minimal and the loading time for applications is also significantly less.

In terms of graphics performance, we don’t expect much from this budget laptop as it has Intel UHD graphics. It will help the CPU to handle intensive graphic tasks but games and heavy editing software will not run as you expect.

Display

The HP 250 G8 sports a 15.6-inch HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

This panel has a sufficient brightness level and you can use the laptop indoors conveniently but the outdoor visibility is poor.

The viewing angles aren’t that great therefore watching the panel from the front is the best solution.

In terms of colours, this panel has a decent contrast ratio and dynamic range, making it ideal for media consumption.

Miscellaneous

Out of the box, the HP 250 G8 does not have any pre-installed OS like Windows or Linux. Well, you can install your favourite OS by yourself using the bootable USB flash drive.

The full-sized non-backlit keyboard on the deck has a decent key travel distance and the typing feedback is good.

The trackpad supports multi-finger gestures and it has dedicated hardware buttons for left and right-click.

The camera positioned at the display top chin provides a decent video quality and you can use it to attend online classes and for video calls.

Battery Life

The HP 250 G8 is powered by a 3-cell 41Wh lithium-ion battery that will provide power backup for about 5 hours on a single charge.

The bundled wall mount charger will juice up the battery levels from zero to full in 2 to 2:30 hours.

Verdict

The HP 250 G8 is the best DOS laptop in the market for the price of Rs.35,000. It features the latest powerful processor and gives excellent performance on everyday tasks.

Processor and Performance

The Lenovo Thinkpad E15 runs the show with the help of the latest eleventh generation i3 dual-core processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.1GHz.

The eleventh-generation Intel i3 is now available in almost all budget laptops and the ThinkPad E15 is no exception.

This dual-core processor has a turbo clock frequency of 4.1GHz and is paired with the 4GB DDR4 RAM.

Although 4GB RAM is kind of a bummer to start with, casual tasks such as document editing, web browsing and media consumption will work just fine. If you want to increase the RAM further, Lenovo has provided the option to expand the same up to 16GB.

As for the storage, what you get is a 256GB SSD that delivers instantaneous boot times and faster application loading.

The integrated Intel UHD graphics do a good job in assisting the CPU to deal with graphically intensive tasks except for games.

Display

The Lenovo ThinkPad E15 sports a 15-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

You can manually install an OS of your choice, be it Windows or Linux according to your preference.

The C deck houses a full-sized non-backlit keyboard with a dedicated number pad. The curved shaped keycaps offer a comfortable typing experience for the most part.

Battery Life

The Lenovo ThinkPad E15 is powered by a 3-cell battery that provides a screen on time up to 4-5 hours on a single charge.

The bundled 45W power adapter juices up the battery from 0 – 100 within 2 to 2:30 hours.

Cons

Asus doesn’t need an introduction among Indian customers as it is a very popular brand here, thanks to its affordable laptops and ROG series gaming machines.

The Asus Vivobook 14 is a portable lightweight laptop priced at just Rs.34,990 offering excellent everyday usage performance.

Design and Build Quality

The Asus Vivobook 14 is built using high-quality plastic and the construction feels sturdy, however, you do notice some minor flex here and there but it’s nothing much of a deal-breaker.

Weighing at 1.55Kg, this laptop is not that heavy to carry around, and thanks to its 14-inch form factor, it fits easily inside regular backpacks.

This laptop has a smooth finish on the lid with an embossed Asus logo positioned in the center.

The full-sized hinge mechanism provides enough friction to operate the lid smoothly and when you open the lid the deck will raise at a certain angle which gives better typing posture.

To prevent thermal throttling, there is an air intake grille at the bottom side of the laptop and heat exhaust through the left-hand side vent.

Connectivity Features:

The Asus Vivobook 14 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 2.0 ports
  • 1 x USB 3.2 port
  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader

Processor and Performance

The Asus Vivobook 14 runs on the latest Intel i3 eleventh-generation dual-core chipset that has a maximum clock frequency of 4.1GHz.

The 4GB DDR4 RAM onboard clocked at 3200MHz handles casual tasks such as document editing and web browsing like a champ, without any lags or stutters.

Speaking of the storage, the 256GB SSD onboard delivers faster data transfers and results in instantaneous bootup and app loading.

Display

The Asus Vivobook 14 features the 14-inch Full HD LED-backlit anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Thanks to its 14-inch display and high resolution, the visuals and text appearing on the panel looks sharper and cleaner.

The colour reproduction is okay and we think that the contrast ratio could have been better but considering the price it’s tolerable.

The anti-glare coating on the panel is beneficial for those who sit in front of the laptop for hours. It eliminates the light reflection and reduces stress happening to your eyes so you can work for long hours hassle-free.

To keep the internal temperatures in check, the laptop has an air intake grill located at the bottom side and the heat dissipation is carried out through the rear side ventilation.

Connectivity Features:

The Dell Vostro 3491 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports

Miscellaneous

The Dell Vostro 3401 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. And as a cherry on top, the company has provided MS Office Home/Student 2019 as well.

Since it’s a 14-inch laptop, you surely miss the numeric keyboard and the given tenkeyless keyboard has no LED backlight.

The typing experience is good as the keys are spaced well and the travel distance is ample.

This concludes our list of the nine best laptops with SSD storage in the Indian market.

Each laptop we have reviewed here caters to a specific set of use cases that you can decide after reading.

Solid State Drive – Things You Should Know About

Solid State Drive (SSD) is a new generation of storage medium used in electronic peripherals as a replacement to the conventional hard disk drives.

Advantages of SSD

  • Having an SSD on the laptop means your system boots up significantly faster than a laptop running on HDD/
  • Operating systems/programs installed on the SSD loads quickly.
  • Since this storage drive has no moving parts it works silently and is shock-resistant; moreover, it consumes less power, therefore the laptop battery will last longer.
  • SSD generates less heat which means it’s good for long-term use and is reliable.

Types of SSD

There are generally 2 types of SSD available in the market

  • SATA SSD
  • Nvme SSD

SATA SSD

The SATA looks more like an HDD but has a low thickness and has no rotating part inside it.

A SATA SSD has a minimum read and write speed of 500MB/s which is almost five times faster than the hard drive.

A SATA drive is good for casual and light users, also, it is cheaper compared to the Nvme SSDs.

Nvme SSD

The Nvme(Non-volatile memory express) drive has more than 1.5GB/s read and write speed that results in a faster system boot up and the programs installed on this SSD loads much quicker.

This type of SSD looks similar to the RAM stick – it contains microcontrollers that consume less power and it works much faster than the SATA drives.

M.2

The M.2 is usually determined after the SSD storage type, the M.2 is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors.

An M.2 SSD is tremendously fast and it helps to reduce the size of the SSD.

When the laptop motherboard does not have the M.2 connector then the Nvme SSD is connected via PCIe(peripheral component interconnect express) card that has M.2 connector, that’s why many laptop companies described the SSD as PCIe Nvme M.2 SSD.

Read and Write Speed in SSD

Read/write speeds indicates the performance of a storage device. The read speed refers to how much time it takes to open a file from the device, and the write speed shows how long it takes to save a file to the device.

  1. Hi ,
    Very informative content.Loved it!

I am looking for a laptop which costs around 40k with an SSD.And this is the first time I’m buying a laptop.I’ve read your recommendations and out of the 10 laptops I am thinking to go with the Honor MagicBook 15.’cause I really like it.Especially its design.

But I’m concerned that if it’s lack of hardware upgradability will be an issue in the future.

I’m a degree 1st year cs student. This laptop is mainly for programming and web surfing. And I need to use it atleast for 4 years. And I really don’t wanna make any mistakes ‘that could have been avoidable’.

So Sir,what do you think? Is Honor a good choice?
Is 8 GB DDR4 RAM enough for programming ?
    Any suggestions ?
    Looking forward for your reply.

    • Hi Faris!

We personally use Honor Magicbook 15 (Link – http://fkrt.it/Q2MVtSNNNN) in our office and are quite satisfied with its performance till date. We use this laptop for occasional graphics and web design works along with casual web browsing and is yet to encounter a lag or stutter in between. The 8GB RAM inside is not expandable but it is adequate enough for use cases such as programming, media consumption and light multitasking, thanks partly to the AMD Ryzen 5 CPU inside.

With the aluminum chassis construction, the build quality feels durable and sturdy and will last you easily for years if used carefully. One main gripe we have with this machine is the lack of a backlit keyboard, which would have made this laptop a perfect 10/10 recommendation. We would also suggest you to go through our individual review of this laptop here – Honor Magic Book 15 review.

      • Thanks for the detailed reply.really appreciate it.
But it looks like Honor Laptop is out of stock in near shops as well as in flipkart and amazon.
So Can you suggest me a viable alternative for Honor in this price range?

      • Hi Faris!

You can check out the Mi Notebook 14 (Link – https://amzn.to/2LP8cF2) priced at Rs.43,999 which is almost similar to the Honor Magic book 15 in terms of build quality and performance. One main differentiating factor between these two laptops are the processors inside. The Mi Notebook 14, instead of the AMD Ryzen 5 has a quad-core Intel tenth generation i5-10210U on board. Performance wise, both these laptops performs the same. If you are not strict with budget, we’d also recommend you to check out the newer Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (Link – https://amzn.to/39zBPSG) with the latest fourth generation Ryzen 5 onboard priced at Rs.49,990.

  2. Dear Bettershark,

I need a laptop, mostly for office work that involves MS office, email writing, printing / scanning docs, internet reading / watching videos, online meetings, basic storage of just 512gb.

But what I really need is a laptop with fast booting [I don’t know if SSD is what does that trick], light weight. It needs to have Windows and MS office pre-installed. Ethernet / LAN port is a must. Build quality needs to be robust. Could you suggest me a cost effective laptop for these requirements?

    • Hi Gopalakrishnan!

You’re right. SSD storage makes a laptop boot faster and load apps quickly from the memory without any delays.

We’d suggest you to check out the HP 15s laptop that features a 512GB SSD storage and a powerful tenth generation Intel Core i5 processor that can carry out tasks you mentioned without breaking a sweat. And the RJ 45 Ethernet/LAN port is hard to come by in modern day laptops but luckily this device has one. Although this laptop is priced at Rs.49,990, we’d say it is well worth as it comes with a fully licensed copy of MS Office 2019 out of the box, which if brought separately would set you anywhere from 7-10k extra.
