6. Mi Notebook 14

Value for Money Ultrabook
- Dedicated Nvidia GPU
- Powerful 10th gen Intel i5 processor
- Up to 6 hours of battery life
Lightweight metal chassis
Thin bezel Full HD display
Fast and reliable SSD storage
No hardware upgradability
Mi Notebook 14 is the first laptop that Xiaomi has officially launched in the Indian market.
Competing with the likes of Honor Magicbook 15 and the Vivobook lineup from Asus, this device packs in a lot of punch for its asking price of just under Rs.50,000.
Design and Build Quality
The Mi Notebook 14 is made out of lightweight aluminium to enhance the build quality while maintaining lightweight characteristics.
Also, this metal build makes this laptop feel similar to that of the Apple Macbooks, which is of course a very good thing.
However, the hinge mechanism of this laptop feels a little bit less robust as the monitor lid wobbles a bit when kept under a ceiling fan. This can very well be an issue with individual units so please take it with a grain of salt.
Weight at just 1.5Kg, this 14-inch form factor ultrabook is very easy to deal with and carry around.
The single exhaust fan inside keeps the internal temperature under check but at times it gets a bit louder for our liking.
Connectivity Features:
The MI notebook 14 features the following I/O ports:
- 2 x USB 3.1 ports
- 1 x USB 2.0 port
- 1 x HDMI port
- 3.5mm combo audio jack
Processor and Performance
The Mi notebook 14 is powered by the tenth generation Intel i5 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz.
This CPU can turbo boost up to 4.2GHz depending on the processor load.
This CPU is powerful enough to deal with all your casual computing needs and as a cherry on top, this ultrabook comes loaded with a dedicated 2GB Nvidia MX250 GPU.
This will let you have the flexibility to do some video editing, casual gaming and much more without having to stress too much on the processor.
The 512GB SSD storage as expected is fast and reliable and elevates the everyday performance to a whole new level.
The 8GB DDR4 RAM is enough for basic multitasking for the most part. This is soldered on to the motherboard and there are no additional expansion slots on the motherboard.
Display
The Mi notebook 14 has a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Speaking of the bezels, the sides bezels are narrow but the upper and bottom chin is
slightly thicker. The thin bezels on the sides make this display look wider than the actual size and provides an immersive media consumption.
Thanks to the 14-inch form factor, the pixel density is higher which results in sharper and clean visuals and text.
The colour accuracy is decent for the price and the dynamic range is satisfactory as well. In terms of brightness, you won’t find much trouble using this device indoors.
Miscellaneous
The Mi notebook 14 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.
The keyboard on this laptop is kind of a hit and miss affair. The keys are well spaced and have decent travel distance but it is not backlit.
This makes the keyboard harder to use at night or under dimly-lit conditions.
The trackpad story is no different as well. Even though it is well-positioned where the fingers will naturally come in contact with, the gesture actions seem a bit finicky at times.
Instead of integrating the webcam with the upper chin of the display bezel, Xiaomi has included it separately in the box.
Battery Life
The Mi Notebook 14 is powered by a 46Wh lithium-ion battery that Xiaomi claims to last up to 10 hours but in real usage, you will get anywhere from 5-7 hours of screen on time.
The bundled 65W AC adapter in the box juices up the battery life from 0-100% in 2-3 hours.
Verdict
If you are after a lightweight laptop with a metal build and excellent everyday performance, the Mi Notebook is a good choice for a budget under Rs.50,000.
