With the matte black finish on the lid with the adorning Acer logo in the center, this laptop looks and feels premium.

The fit and finish of this mid-range laptop feel adequate for the price. However, there is minor flex on the keyboard deck but it is very common in laptops with plastic chassis and nothing like that of a deal-breaker.

Just like Aspire 5 predecessor models, this one also has Aspire branding on the hinge. The hinge mechanism is robust and keeps the display steady even under speedy ceiling fans.

Weighing 1.9Kg, the Acer Aspire 5 is heavier than some of its competitors out there.

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port

Processor and Performance

After the release of Swift 3 with 11th generation CPU, Acer has started their work quickly on Aspire series models with the same chipset but at an affordable price.

You guessed it right, the Acer Aspire 5 is powered by the latest Intel i5 11th generation – 1135G7 quad-core processor with a max clock speed of 4.2GHz.

This eleventh generation CPU from Intel delivers 30% better efficiency in performance compared to tenth-generation processors.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM inside will handle most of the daily used tasks without any hitch and multitasking too works fine without any lags or stutters. This laptop has the provision to expand the RAM up to 20GB in case you want that extra performance edge.

On the storage front, Aspire 5 comes equipped with a 512GB SSD storage unit that boots up the system quickly and loads apps significantly faster than a conventional HDD.

In terms of graphic performance, this machine has the latest Intel Integrated Iris Xe GPU which is comparatively better than old UHD graphics.

Display

The Acer Aspire 5 features a 15.6-inch Full HD ComfyView IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The colour reproduction of this panel is quite good and the visuals do not look washed out when viewed from the sides, thanks to the IPS technology.

Bezels on the sides are minimal and provide an immersive wide viewing experience, however, the top and bottom chin are still slightly thicker in comparison.

This panel is sufficiently bright enough to be used under indoor lighting without any trouble whatsoever.

Miscellaneous

The Acer Aspire 5 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The full-sized keyboard on the deck is backlit enabled for effortless low-light usability.

The asymmetrically positioned trackpad supports multi-finger gestures and response feedback is flawless.

The latest processor coupled with the fast SSD delivers you an unmatched computing performance in this price range.

Q

A bit heavy

Vaio is a name that some of us are familiar with Sony laptops from the past. Well, now Vaio is an independent brand and has introduced their newest lineup of laptops in the Indian market just last week.

The E15 from Vaio is a mid-range work laptop priced under Rs.50,000 available for purchase in the Indian market, competing with the likes of Asus Vivobook and Acer Aspire series laptops.

Design and Build Quality

The Vaio E15 has a complete plastic construction which is not bad in any way since the quality of materials used is top-notch.

The matte finish display lid with the Vaiologo in the center looks aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.

With the whole body plastic build, the Vaio E15 weighs around 1.77Kg, which is quite acceptable for a laptop with a 15-inch form factor.

The hinge mechanism on this laptop is robust enough to keep the display from wobbling around too much.

This laptop from Vaio has tried to mimic the ergo-lift feature from Asus laptops. With this feature, when the lid is opened, the keyboard gets raised a little in an inclined position. This helps to have a comfortable typing posture for the users as well as provides unrestricted air circulation to keep the internal temperature under check.

Connectivity Features:

The Vaio E15 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • RJ-45 LAN port
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack
  • MicroSD card slot

Processor and Performance

What powers the Vaio E15 inside is the third generation AMD Ryzen 5 – 3500 quad-core processor with a base clock speed of 2.1GHz and a turbo boost frequency up to 3.7GHz.

This is a budget third-generation AMD CPU that is designed to deliver astonishing performance under an affordable budget.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM onboard clocked at 2400MHz is more than adequate for most of the everyday computing usage from web browsing to media consumption to document editing.

In terms of storage, the Vaio E15 doesn’t skimp too much. This laptop comes with a 512GB SSD onboard with exceptional read/write speeds.

The AMD Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics assist the CPU in handling graphics-intensive tasks and delivers results on par with its Intel counterparts.

Display

The Vaio E15 features a 15.6-inch Full HD LED-backlit IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This display has relatively thin bezels all around. This makes the laptop look premium and much more modern than some of its competitors in this segment.

The colour reproduction and the dynamic range of this panel are very much acceptable for the price and is poised to deliver an immersive media consumption experience. The visuals and text look sharp and detailed on this full HD panel.

Being an IPS display, the viewing angles are wide and the colours appear much more natural and appealing to the eyes.

Miscellaneous

The Vaio E15 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The full-sized keyboard on the deck features an LED-backlighting for trouble-free low-light usability.

The trackpad on this laptop has two(left-right) mechanical buttons, identical to those in the HP 14 and 15 lineup. The quality of this trackpad seems good and it supports multi-finger gestures as well.

Webcam is positioned on the top chin of the display and comes in handy for video conferencing and attending online classes.

Battery Life

The Vaio E15 is rated to last up to 5 hours on a single charge with moderate display brightness. This number is highly subjective and varies from person to person.

The bundled barrel-pin charger in the box takes around 2.30 hours to completely juice up the battery inside.

Verdict

Vaio brings back the classic nostalgia we had with the Sony laptops of the past. This mid-range laptop from Vaio offers decent performance without having to shell out a lot of money from your pocket.

Lenovo is a major brand in the Indian laptop market with their budget-oriented Ideapad series being one of the popular budget laptop lineups at present.

The Ideapad Slim 3i is a feature-rich budget laptop from Lenovo priced at just Rs.49,990.

Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i is made entirely from plastic materials. There is some slight flex on the chassis here and there but nothing too major to be a deal-breaker.

The display lid has a brushed metal finish with the Lenovo branding on the right-hand side.

Weighing at 1.85Kg, this laptop is not at all lightweight. Expect some heft on your shoulders while travelling with this machine around.

Designwise, the Slim 3i looks identical to Lenovo’s other Ideapad laptops and to be honest, it has become too repetitive at this point.

Connectivity Features:

The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.2 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • 4-in-1 media reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i comes equipped with the tenth-generation Intel i5 quad-core processor with a base clock speed of 1GHz and a turbo boost up to 3.6GHz.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM onboard handles both everyday tasks and light multitasking like a champ without much issues.

With this laptop, you get the provision to expand the RAM up to 12GB, which is a desirable option to have.

The star of the show here is the 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD which not only is reliable and power-efficient but one step ahead of the curve in terms of performance.

Display

The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i features a 15.6-inch Full HD LED-backlit anti-glare IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

The display has thin bezels on the sides with reasonably thick top and bottom linings. The colours from this panel turn out to be vivid and bright and the dynamic range is impressive as well.

If you are a hardcore media junkie, you will feel right at home with this 15.6-inch FHD panel.

This display has a peak brightness of 250nits, which is ideal for indoor usage and not something that you’d want to fiddle with while being outdoors.

Miscellaneous

The Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

Lenovo has also provided pre-installed MS Office Home and Student 2019 with lifetime validity, which is ideal for students and office workers.

The full-size keyboard on the deck has curved keys which feel comfortable while typing. Unfortunately, this keyboard doesn’t feature LED backlighting, which according to us is a big letdown in terms of usability.

The trackpad on this laptop supports multi-finger gestures, and thanks to the Microsoft precision drivers, the response is instant and flawless.

Bottom firing speakers on this laptop sound decent enough when listened to in a small-sized room.

Battery Life

The Ideapad Slim 3i is powered by a 45Wh lithium battery that is rated to last 5 hours on a single charge at 50-60% display brightness.

The bundled 65W charger in the box manages to recharge the battery back from zero to a hundred in just under 2.30 hours.

Verdict

Lenovo Ideapad Slim 3i is a winner in terms of performance, battery life and value for money proposition.

If you’re okay with the lack of a backlit keyboard, then definitely the Slim 3i is a good choice for a budget under Rs.50,000.

The x360 series laptops from HP are 2-in-1 convertible laptops that can be used as a work laptop and as a standalone tablet for entertainment/graphic designing works.

The 2-in-1 convertible laptop from HP is targeted towards the students and business class people.

The HP Pavilion X360 is powered by the latest eleventh-generation Intel processor ensuring a satisfactory performance worth every penny you pay.

Design and Build Quality

The HP Pavilion X360 is made out of aluminium and the construction quality is commendable and it feels premium.

Coming on to the lid, the matte finish texture with the reflective HP logo in the centre adds an aesthetically pleasing appeal to this convertible laptop.

The hinge of this laptop reminds us that of the HP premium Envy lineup. The robust hinge mechanism of this laptop works almost the same and is fully rotatable up to 360-degrees.

Weighing at 1.61Kg, this is one of the lightest convertible laptops available in the Indian market priced under Rs.50,000.

HP has cleverly designed this laptop to have an efficient thermal system to keep the internal temperature under check.

This laptop boasts the all-new Wi-Fi 6 card inside for seamless high-speed wireless internet connectivity.

Connectivity Features:

The HP Pavilion X360 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The CPU inside the HP Pavilion X360 is the Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a turbo boost frequency up to 4.1GHz.

This entry-level CPU from Intel delivers smooth and lag-free performance with light multitasking and everyday workloads.

The Intel integrated UHD graphics assists the CPU to manage graphically intensive tasks.

Since this laptop was not designed for gaming by any means, the omission of a dedicated GPU doesn’t feel like a deal-breaker.

The 256GB Nvme M.2 SSD inside this laptop has incredible read and write speeds and offers near-instantaneous boot times and app loading.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM onboard is sufficient to do casual day to day as well as multitasking works.

Display

The HP Pavilion X360 features a 14-inch Full HD touch-enabled IPS display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Apart from a decent colour reproduction, the image on this small size display looks sharp and crisp, thanks to the increased pixel density resulting from the smaller display size.

Remember this is a touchscreen display that can be operated either by hands or by a digital stylus. However, this laptop doesn’t come with a stylus bundled in the box.

Setting up a laptop in a tent mode will be helpful to watch movies or learn a new recipe while making it in the kitchen.

The panel has a brightness of 250 nits which is suitable for indoor work. But in the outdoors, the display visuals are a bit hard to see under direct sunlight.

Miscellaneous

The HP Pavilion X360 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS. A licensed version of Microsoft Home and Office 2019 is also added which is highly beneficial for students as well as office workers.

HP provides an onboard physical fingerprint scanner for quick login and to protect important files inside your computer.

The LED-backlit keyboard on the deck has no dedicated numeric keypad. The key quality feels premium and it delivers tactile feedback while typing.

The backlighting is useful while working in a dimly-lit environment.

The trackpad is positioned in the centre. The space for palm rest is good enough and the trackpad registers the gesture movement precisely.

Battery Life

Powered by a 3-cell 43Wh lithium battery, this laptop can deliver 5 hours of screen time.

The bundled 65W AC adapter is a fast charger that juices up the battery from zero to full in under 2 hours.

Verdict

If you are looking for a convertible notebook that delivers powerful performance under an affordable budget, the HP Pavilion x360 is a good choice.

The touchscreen panel with a 360-degree rotatable hinge doubles up as a powerful tablet for media consumption and tasks such as graphic designing.

Q

Mi Notebook 14 is the first laptop that Xiaomi has officially launched in the Indian market.

Competing with the likes of Honor Magicbook 15 and the Vivobook lineup from Asus, this device packs in a lot of punch for its asking price of just under Rs.50,000.

Design and Build Quality

The Mi Notebook 14 is made out of lightweight aluminium to enhance the build quality while maintaining lightweight characteristics.

Also, this metal build makes this laptop feel similar to that of the Apple Macbooks, which is of course a very good thing.

However, the hinge mechanism of this laptop feels a little bit less robust as the monitor lid wobbles a bit when kept under a ceiling fan. This can very well be an issue with individual units so please take it with a grain of salt.

Weight at just 1.5Kg, this 14-inch form factor ultrabook is very easy to deal with and carry around.

The single exhaust fan inside keeps the internal temperature under check but at times it gets a bit louder for our liking.

Connectivity Features:

The MI notebook 14 features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

The Mi notebook 14 is powered by the tenth generation Intel i5 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz.

This CPU can turbo boost up to 4.2GHz depending on the processor load.

This CPU is powerful enough to deal with all your casual computing needs and as a cherry on top, this ultrabook comes loaded with a dedicated 2GB Nvidia MX250 GPU.

This will let you have the flexibility to do some video editing, casual gaming and much more without having to stress too much on the processor.

The 512GB SSD storage as expected is fast and reliable and elevates the everyday performance to a whole new level.

The 8GB DDR4 RAM is enough for basic multitasking for the most part. This is soldered on to the motherboard and there are no additional expansion slots on the motherboard.

Display

The Mi notebook 14 has a 14-inch Full HD anti-glare display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Speaking of the bezels, the sides bezels are narrow but the upper and bottom chin is
slightly thicker. The thin bezels on the sides make this display look wider than the actual size and provides an immersive media consumption.

Thanks to the 14-inch form factor, the pixel density is higher which results in sharper and clean visuals and text.

The colour accuracy is decent for the price and the dynamic range is satisfactory as well. In terms of brightness, you won’t find much trouble using this device indoors.

Miscellaneous

The Mi notebook 14 comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

The keyboard on this laptop is kind of a hit and miss affair. The keys are well spaced and have decent travel distance but it is not backlit.

This makes the keyboard harder to use at night or under dimly-lit conditions.

The trackpad story is no different as well. Even though it is well-positioned where the fingers will naturally come in contact with, the gesture actions seem a bit finicky at times.

Instead of integrating the webcam with the upper chin of the display bezel, Xiaomi has included it separately in the box.

Battery Life

The Mi Notebook 14 is powered by a 46Wh lithium-ion battery that Xiaomi claims to last up to 10 hours but in real usage, you will get anywhere from 5-7 hours of screen on time.

The bundled 65W AC adapter in the box juices up the battery life from 0-100% in 2-3 hours.

Verdict

If you are after a lightweight laptop with a metal build and excellent everyday performance, the Mi Notebook is a good choice for a budget under Rs.50,000.

HP is a California based company that has a very loyal customer base in the Indian subcontinent.

The HP 14s is a mid-range office laptop with decent internals and smooth performance for a budget of just under Rs.50,000.

Design and Build Quality

The design of the HP 14s looks very similar to its predecessor models that had the tenth generation Intel processors onboard.

The HP 14s has a unique gold coloured matte finish on the lid which makes this laptop look more premium. This makes the laptop stand out from the rest as most of the laptops in the market either come in metallic grey or black colour.

Weighing at 1.47Kg this lightweight machine is lightweight and easy to carry around in bags and backpacks.
The hinge mechanism is robust and it helps the display lid to open and close, safe and sound. Moreover, it prevents the lid from wobbling while sitting under a speedy fan.

The rubberized feet provided at the bottom section keeps this laptop firm on a flat surface without moving around too much.

Connectivity Features:

The HP 14s features the following I/O ports:

  • 2 x USB 3.1 ports
  • 1 x USB Type-C port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • MicroSD card reader
  • 3.5mm combo audio jack

Processor and Performance

As we mentioned earlier, the HP 14s packs in the latest Intel i3 11th generation dual-core processor with a max clock speed of 4.1GHz.

This dual-core processor along with the 8GB DDR4 RAM onboard clocked at 2666MHz delivers a smooth and lag-free everyday computing experience like no other.

Be it with multitasking or document editing, you won’t find this laptop breaking a sweat.

As a cherry on top, the HP 14s comes with a 512GB PCIe Nvme M.2 SSD for quick boot and faster app loading times.

Display

The HP 14s features a 14-inch Full HD IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

This panel has slim bezels on the sides which make this display look bigger than its actual size.

Being an IPS display, the colours look vivid and vibrant even when viewed from the sides.

Since this is a 14-inch panel with full HD resolution, the pixel density count is high which in turn results in sharp and detailed visuals as well as text.

This panel is ideal for indoor usage with its 250nits of maximum brightness and fairs average when used outdoors.

Miscellaneous

The HP 14s comes pre-installed with the Windows 10 Home OS.

As an added benefit, HP has included the MS Office Home and Student 2019 lifetime license with this machine.

The tenkeyless natural-silver coloured keyboard on this laptop has a good key travel distance for a comfortable typing experience and with the LED-backlighting you can work even in dimly-lit conditions.

The trackpad always supports multi-finger gestures and works well as advertised.

Battery Life

The HP 14s is powered by a 3-cell 41Wh lithium battery inside that gives power backup for 5 hours on a single charge.

HP also included a 65W charger in the box which takes somewhere around 2.5 hours for one complete power cycle.

Verdict

The HP 14s is a perfect choice for office users and students alike. The compact, lightweight form factor and the stunning display along with the powerful processor onboard makes the purchase of HP 14s, a no-brainer at this price point.

The Magic book 15 is Honor’s first ultrabook entrant in the Indian market which competes with the Mi Notebook directly.

Priced well under Rs.50,000, the Honor Magic book is packed with value-added features making it one of the best ultrabooks suited for students and professionals alike.

Design and Build Quality

The Magic book 15 features an all-metal chassis – aluminium to be specific. The fit and finish of this laptop are exceptional for the price.

The azure blue chamfered edges of this ultrabook make it look stunning and premium.

This machine weighs just 1.53Kg and has a maximum thickness of 16.9mm which aids in better portability.

The display hinge is very robust and the screen doesn’t wobble much even when used at odd angles.

The keyboard on this device has large well-spaced keys. Even though the key travel distance is average, the keyboard feels quite tactile and comfortable.

Unfortunately, there is no keypad lighting on this one.

The C-deck exhibits no flex whatsoever. The large trackpad on the deck is made of plastic and supports gesture controls through Microsoft precision drivers.

Connectivity Features:

The Honor MagicBook 15 features the following I/O ports:

  • 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A port
  • 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A port
  • 1 x USB Type C port
  • 1 x HDMI port

Display

The Honor Magic book 15 comes with a 15.6-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Since this display comes with minimal bezels on all three sides, Honor calls this one a full view panel.

This panel has a screen to body ratio of 87%, making it one of the best immersive ultrabook displays in its price segment.

The colour reproduction is excellent and the contrast levels are commendable as well. This display can get adequately bright for easy screen legibility even under brightly lit environments.

There is an anti-glare coating on top of the display to minimise light reflections. Additionally, it comes with TUV Rheinland certified blue light filter to keep your eyes safe from long-duration laptop usage.

Processor and Performance

The Honor Magic book 15 has the latest AMD Ryzen 5 3500U running the show from inside.

This four core CPU has a base clock of 2.1GHz and can turbo boost up to 4.7GHz on demand.

The Ryzen 5 3500 is plenty powerful for running all productivity apps without any lags or stutters whatsoever.

With the 8GB DDR4 RAM running at 2400MHz, multitasking on this machine is a delightful experience.

Speaking of storage, the Magic book 15 comes with a 256GB NVMe SSD onboard which is very fast to boot up and run apps.

The integrated Vega 8 graphics is capable of handling graphics-intensive tasks quite effortlessly. You can play casual games on this machine but don’t expect to run modern AAA titles.

Miscellaneous

The Honor Magic book 15 has a fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button.

This ultrabook supports Windows Hello sign-in feature for added security to your files and folders with the help of this onboard biometric sensor.

Since the display bezels are too thin to accommodate a webcam on top, Honor has tucked the camera underneath a dedicated key on the keyboard which can be clicked to reveal the pop-up camera.

The dual speakers on this machine sound reasonably loud and clear even at maximum volume levels.

Battery Life

The Honor Magic book 15 is powered by a 45Whr Li-ion battery inside. This battery is rated to last for 6-7 hours on a single charge.

Honor has included a 65W fast charger which can charge the battery from 0-53% in under 35 minutes.

This laptop has a standard USB Type C charging port instead of proprietary charging systems found on other laptops.

Verdict

If you are looking for an ultrabook for enhanced productivity purposes that doesn’t blow a hole in your pocket, the Honor Magic book 15 is a killer deal.

Barring the provision for hardware upgradability and the lack of a backlit keyboard, this ultrabook checks all the right boxes.
