1. Sony WF-1000MX3
Overall Best Pick
- Excellent sound output quality
- Active Noise Cancellation
- Intuitive touch controls
Pros
Solid build quality
Feature-rich companion app
Compatible with Android and iOS devices
Cons
No IP rating
Sony is a well known, multi-faceted Japanese conglomerate that doesn’t need any introduction among consumer electronics enthusiasts all around the world.
The WF-1000MX3 from Sony is one of their flagship premium TWS earbuds that retails for a budget under Rs.20,000 in the Indian market.
Design and Build Quality
The Sony WF-1000MX3, as expected, has a premium minimal design with an excellent fit and finish.
The dual-coloured high-quality charging case and the ergonomically designed earbuds justify the premium price.
The charging case is magnetic and comes with a USB Type-C charging port with support for fast charging. There is a small LED strip upfront which glows in different colours according to the battery charge status.
The TWS earbuds themselves look a bit bulky but fits comfortably inside the ears without falling off easily. Sony has included three pairs of memory foam and three pairs of silicone eartips inside the box so that you can choose from the ones that fit you the best.
One major letdown of these otherwise top of the line TWS earbuds is the lack of IP rating. Sony has not mentioned whether these earbuds are water-resistant, so we advise you to be cautious enough while using them outdoors.
Speakers and Sound Quality
The Sony WF-1000MX3 earbuds feature 6mm neodymium speaker drivers that sound the best in its segment, even better than the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ or the Apple Airpod Pro.
The bass notes sound very natural, without overpowering the vocals or the treble notes a bit.
The overall sound quality is very beautiful and if you’re a true audiophile, this is the best TWS earbuds you can currently purchase in the market.
Sony has incorporated the DSEE HX technology in these earbuds which will automatically upscale the low-quality soundtracks to have a better bass response and vocal clarity.
Yes, these TWS earbuds from Sony come with ANC(Active Noise Cancellation) technology. You can turn it on or off accordingly. There is also an option to turn on the ambient sound reception where you can hear the sounds happening around you without having to remove the earbuds from the ears.
Speaking of the vocal quality in hands-free voice calls, they sound very clean without a bit of distortion on either side.
Miscellaneous
The Sony WF-1000MX3 supports the audio companion app which helps you customize almost everything on this earbud.
Right from programming the tap gestures to adjusting the equalizer presets, this companion app makes everything so easy.
And of course, this TWS earbud supports wearing detection. Once you take out either one of the earbuds from the ear, the music pauses and automatically resumes once you wear it back.
The Sony WF-1000MX3 supports NFC pairing. You can pair any NFC capable device with this earbud with just a light tap.
Battery Life
Sony claims that these earbuds can last for up to six hours of continuous music playback with the ANC turned on. Without the ANC, you can expect it to last anywhere from 7-8 hours on a single charge.
With the included charging case, you will be able to juice up the earbuds three times over completely. It takes around 1.5 hours to charge the charging case from zero to full.
Thanks to the fast charging support, with just 10 minutes of charge, you can continue to use these earbuds for up to 90 minutes.
Verdict
If sound quality is your primary concern and not budget, there is currently no other TWS earbuds available in the market that matches the WF-1000MX3 from Sony.

8. Nothing Ear 1
Best Build Quality
- Well balanced sound output
- Good stage separation
- Active noise cancellation
Pros
Excellent fit and finish
Wireless charging supported case
Feature rich companion app
Cons
Treble feels tinny at times
Nothing is an audio accessory startup founded by OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau. The first product to hit the market from Nothing is the much-hyped Nothing Ear 1 TWS earbuds.
This product is about to launch in India, retailing exclusively via Flipkart for a budget of just under Rs.5,999.
Nothing Ear 1 was rumoured to be launched by July 27, 2021, but the official launch has then been postponed to August 27, 2021, exclusively on Flipkart in India.
Design and Build Quality
The Nothing Ear 1 is nothing like any other TWS earbuds you’ve seen till now. The transparent rectangular stem which displays the circuitry inside is one of a kind in the industry right now.
The rest of the earpiece looks almost similar to that of the Apple Airpod Pro. The fit and finish is excellent and this TWS earbud is very lightweight.
Weighing just under 4.7g in each ear, wearing it for long periods is not a problem.
Not only is the rectangular stem transparent, but also the charging case is transparent. Not only is this a novel design idea but it also serves a purpose. You can see if both the earbuds are inside without actually opening the case.
This charging case has the support for wireless charging. Made from plastic, it is easy to get scratches in this case. It feels a bit hefty when compared to the charging cases of similarly priced TWS earbuds in the market.
Nothing claims that this TWS earbud is IPX4 splash and sweat-resistant, which means you can use it outdoors without any fear of getting damaged.
Speakers and Sound Quality
The Nothing Ear 1 sounds great for its price. The bass is deep and clean, the vocals sound clean and the stage separation is on point.
At higher volume levels, the treble notes sound a bit tinny but not as much as that of a deal-breaker.
The loudness is adequate and there are no noticeable distortions even at higher volume levels.
The Nothing 1 TWS earbuds have an ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) feature that digitally suppresses the ambient noises to deliver a calm, serene music listening experience.
There are two modes of ANC that you can switch depending on your preference. The noise cancellation works decent but don’t expect the level of noise suppression as that of the Apple Air pod.
Miscellaneous
You can control Nothing Ear 1 via the companion app. This app is still in its initial phase so we expect more and more features will be added in the upcoming versions.
The media control on this TWS earbud is via touch gestures activated by finger gestures on the transparent stem.
Sliding the fingers over the stem lets you control and tapping multiple times initiates other actions which can be customized from the app.
There is a find my earbud feature on the companion app that will make the earbud emit an audible pulsating sound for you to locate them.
Battery Life
The Nothing Ear 1 will last for about four hours on a single full charge with the ANC turned on. With the ANC off, you can expect this TWS earbud to last anywhere from 5-6 hours.
With the charging case, you will be able to fully charge the TWS earbuds about 4 times over completely.
Verdict
If you’re someone who likes novelty and likes to stand out from the crowd, the Nothing Ear 1 is an ideal choice.
The transparent construction and decent sound quality is well worth the asking price of just Rs.5,999.
