Best UPS for PC in India (September 2021)

In India, we often face issues regarding voltage fluctuations, power surges and power cuts.

Most electronic appliances available for purchase here have been designed with these in mind, but such abruptions in power will drastically reduce the longevity of the electronic appliances and that is why we use devices such as stabilizers, voltage regulators and UPS.

In this article, we have listed the eleven best UPS available in the Indian market under varied budgets – from expensive to downright cheap.

APC by Schneider Electric is one of the popular UPS manufacturers not just in India but all across the world.

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN is a premium UPS manufactured by the American company retailing for Rs.17,099 in the Indian market.

Build and Design

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN is a futuristic-looking UPS. It looks more like a gaming PC rather than a UPS.

Similar to every other UPS out there, the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN features a complete plastic construction.

In the front section of this UPS, there are three physical buttons and an LCD screen. At the rear, six power output sockets are present out of which four have battery backup and surge protection while two have only surge protection without battery backup.

You will also find an expandable slot for the battery and a USB port on the back of the UPS to connect it to a PC. The USB port is used for data transfer which is used for the APC PowerChute software.

The sides and rear of this premium UPS have ample ventilation to keep the internal circuitry and battery temperature under check. There is also an exhaust fan inside, which is a bit noisy while in operation.

To connect the UPS to the wall outlet, there is a 1.5-meter cord that terminates to a three-pin 16A plug – make sure you have a socket that supports this type of three-pin.

Features

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN is equipped with two 9Ah batteries to power the devices when the electricity is down. The batteries inside will last for approximately 2-4 years.

The recharge time of the battery on this UPS is around 7.2 hours which is pretty decent for such a huge battery.

You can connect your high-end gaming rig or gaming console to this UPS without any worries. This UPS can withstand a maximum load of 1500 VA or 865 Watts which is more than enough for most electronics appliances.

The runtime of the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN on battery power can range anywhere from 60 minutes to 5 minutes based on its load.

The LCD monitor on the UPS gives you information such as the state of charge, output voltage, input voltage, the remaining time on battery power, etc.

Some other features of this UPS include the cold-start functionality, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), and surge protection. The cold start function lets you turn on the UPS even when not connected to a power outlet.

The surge protection protects against sudden voltage spikes that can damage your electronics.

Automatic Voltage Regulation like the name suggests regulates low and high voltages for a stable connection. This is an ideal feature for Indian power conditions.

This UPS also has support for PowerChute software which lets you control your UPS for optimum power management.

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN also has an alarm that beeps when the battery is in use – you can mute the alarm using the button on the UPS.

Verdict

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN is a premium UPS that is meant for gaming PCs and gaming consoles with higher power consumption and sensitive electrical components inside.

Cons

Loud fan noise

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN is yet another UPS system from Schneider Electric available for purchase in India at just Rs.9,499.

Build and Design

The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN is the younger sibling of the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN we had discussed above in this article.

This UPS system has the same design and build quality as that of the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN – the only difference between these being the load capacity and the battery capacity inside.

The front section houses the power button, the menu cycle button for the LCD, and a button to silence the beeping alarm of the UPS.

This UPS is quite large compared to some of the other UPS systems in its price segment.

At the rear, there are six power output sockets, out of which four have battery backup and surge protection while the other two only have surge protection.

We also have a USB port and serial interface that is compatible with the Powerchute UPS Management Software.

This UPS features a three-pin cord that can be connected to any standard power outlet.

Since this UPS has the same design as the premium BR1500G-IN, it also has some of its drawbacks such as the loud fan noise. It would have been better if APC had rescued the loud fan noise on this relatively low-powered variant.

Features

The feature set of the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN is similar to that of the BR1500G-IN.

The biggest difference between both these UPS systems is the maximum load capacity. The APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN had a maximum load capacity of 1000 VA or 600W while the BR1500G-IN has a maximum load of 1500 VA or 865W.

This is a line-interactive UPS system which means it supports automatic voltage regulation and has a wider input voltage range between 170-294V.

The rest of the features are the same as the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN such as the cold start functionality, alarm system, generator compatibility, surge protection, etc.

The battery on the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN takes around 7-8 hours to fully charge which is similar to that of the BR1500G-IN.

Thanks to the LCD, you can also get a brief idea regarding the battery life remaining and other miscellaneous information.

APC claims that the battery of the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN should last for about 2-4 years which is pretty decent for a budget UPS.

Verdict

If the premium APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G-IN is expensive and you want something a bit cheaper but retains all of its features, then the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1000G-IN is the UPS system that you should go for.

Online Double Conversion UPS

An online double-conversion UPS system is a UPS that converts AC input and rectifies it to DC to feed the battery and the connected device.

Line-interactive UPS

Line-interactive UPS is the most common UPS system in the country and it is suitable for the current power situation in India.

This UPS is suitable for areas where power outages are rare but there are fluctuations in voltage. This UPS provides both power conditioning and battery backup.

Offline UPS

According to Wikipedia: The offline/standby UPS offers only the most basic features, providing surge protection and battery backup. The protected equipment is normally connected directly to incoming utility power.

Tech jargons related to UPS

Surge Protector

A surge protector is a device that protects electronics equipment from sudden spikes in voltage. It is ideal to purchase a UPS with surge protection measures to make sure the connected devices are safe from voltage spikes.

Cold-start

The cold-start function lets you start the UPS without having to connect it to the main power supply. This is a useful feature when you have an emergency but there is no electricity.

Automatic Voltage Regulator ( AVR )

The AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) feature helps in stabilizing the power during power surges, fluctuations, or short circuits.

How long does a UPS provide battery backup?

We know that a UPS is meant to provide battery backup for your electronic device when there is no main power. But the amount of time the battery backup is present varies based on the connected load and the battery capacity.

For a regular PC, if you connect a 600VA UPS to it you can expect around 10-20 minutes of battery back up but on the other hand, a gaming PC won’t last more than 5 minutes.

So the load of the UPS is inversely proportional to its run time.
