Design and Build Quality

The glass front, plastic back and the plastic frame in between complete the POCO M2 design.

The front glass, However, is protected by the Corning gorilla glass 3 to minimise chances of accidental scratches.

POCO has also added a water repellent coating on top which will help dispose water droplets and sweat easily from the chassis.

This device is available in three exciting colours for you to choose from.

The design is similar to the Redmi lineup of smartphones, which is very odd since POCO is mostly rebranding Redmi phones these days with little or no change whatsoever.

The USB type C port on this device supports USB OTG to plug in external media devices for direct file access.

The speaker sounds reasonably loud and clear but exhibits some distortion at maximum volume levels.

Display

The POCO M2 features a 6.53-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

This is an IPS LCD with excellent viewing angles and colour accuracy.

With a tall aspect ratio of 19.5:9, thanks to the waterdrop notch upfront, this smartphone is somewhat usable with a single hand.

Having a pixel density of 397ppi, this is one of the best displays we have ever come across in a sub. Rs.10,000 smartphone.

Processor and Performance

The POCO M2 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz.

This is a gaming-centric chipset with a powerful Mali G52 GPU that performs well with games such as PUBG: Mobile and Free Fire.

Not only that, the 6GB RAM on this device is one of a kind in this price segment that along with 64GB of eMMC internal storage makes the performance buttery smooth, even with multitasking.

If you are looking for a budget Performance powerhouse, there is none better than POCO M2 in this price segment as of now.

Camera

The POCO M2 has a quad rear camera with a 13MP primary shooter followed by an 8MP ultrawide sensor, 5MP macro and 2MP depth mode sensor.

Design and Build Quality

The Redmi 9 Prime has a glass front and a plastic back with a plastic frame in the middle.

Redmi calls the design of this smartphone the Aura 360 pattern which we are familiar with the likes of POCO X2.

The circular gradient pattern around the camera looks and feels very premium.

Redmi has included a water repellent coating over the chassis to offer some sort of protection from liquid spills and light rains.

The physical fingerprint scanner on this smartphone is placed below the vertical camera module, just like that on the Redmi Note 8 Pro.

Display

This is one area where Redmi 9 Prime beats its competition by a significant margin.

While smartphones such as Realme Narzo and Motorola G8 Power lite come with HD+ displays in this price segment, Redmi has decided to include a 6.53-inch full HD panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels.

This display is crazy good for the price in terms of colour accuracy and sharpness. It has a peak brightness of up to 400 nits for easy sunlight visibility as well.

Protected with Corning gorilla glass 3 on top, the Note 9 Prime has a pixel density close to 400ppi, which makes it quite comparable with the display of the higher-priced Redmi Note 9 Pro.

Processor

Running on the latest Android 10 OS with MIUI skin on top, the Redmi 9 prime can even play games without any issues.

Both these camera units can capture videos at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30fps.

Battery life

The Redmi 9 prime packs a massive 5020mAh Li-ion battery inside.

This battery is the same as that of the one found on its elder siblings – the Redmi Note 9 and the Redmi Note 9 Pro series.

With moderate to heavy usage, the Redmi 9 Prime is rated to last over two days on a single charge.

This device supports 18W fast charging if you can invest in a separate charger.

Build Quality and Design

The design of the Realme C15 is one of its centre point attractions. The matte finish back panel has an eye-pleasing two-tone subtle design which gets amplified when viewed under direct light.

It looks refreshing to the eyes and at the same time imparts a sense of premium quality feel to the device.

The body and construction quality of the Realme C15 feels rigid and solid.

The buttons are clicky and tactile. Since they are slightly raised from the surrounding support frame, it’s easy to differentiate even at low light conditions.

Realme C15 does come with a headphone jack. That’s happy news for hardcore music enthusiasts, right?

The Realme C15 comes with the outdated micro USB charging port which is a bit of a disappointment if you ask us,

The fingerprint scanner located at the back is very fast and responsive, one of the best in its price segment.

Processor and Performance

The Realme C15 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 octa-core SoC clocked at 2.35GHz which is a budget champion in performance aspects.

With the relatively powerful Helio G35 and 3GB RAM, you can experience buttery smooth everyday performance and decent gaming experience with this device.

With the latest Android 10 and the optimized Realme OS skin, the device runs perfectly fine even while performing resource-intensive operations.

Design and Build Quality

The Infinix Hot 10 has a modern design pleasing to the eyes for a phone costing under Rs.10,000.

The construction is of plastic, but that doesn’t make the device cheap in hand.

The glossy plastic back has a textures design which looks attractive under direct light.

Display

This display has a punch hole cutout to house the front camera.

The display of this smartphone has an adequate brightness level which is good enough for indoor as well as outdoor usage.

The colours look vivid and the blacks are defined. This is an IPS panel meaning the viewing angles are excellent.

The Infinix Hot 10 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G70 coupled with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.

The processor performs well when it comes to casual usage and multi-tasking, even when it comes to gaming, this chipset does not break a sweat.

Camera

Q

A bit heavy

Samsung has been consistently outnumbered in the sales of budget segment smartphones by Xiaomi for a while now.

This was mainly because the Samsung budget phones were specced abysmally and the price for the same was significantly higher than its Chinese counterparts in the segment.

Samsung tries to bridge this gap by introducing the affordable yet feature-rich M series smartphone of which the M02s is the entry-level offering.

Design and Build Quality

Samsung Galaxy M02s has smooth textured finishing on the rear with a fine diamond-cut design that looks and feels good.

The entire construction of the phone is from plastic and we like the fact that the back of the Samsung Galaxy M02s does not capture fingerprint smudges too easily.

This smartphone weighs 196g which feels slightly heavy when compared to some other devices in the same price segment.

Speaking of the connectivity ports, this smartphone features a 3.5mm headphone jack and most importantly a Type-C charging/data syncing port instead of the outdated micro USB.

The volume rockers and power button are on the right side of the frame and offer a satisfactory tactile feedback when pressed.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy M02s features a 6.5-inch HD+ Infinity V-notch display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels.

This panel has minimal bezels on the sides and top, providing you with an immersive media consumption experience.

In a budget device, you barely find a display like this smartphone. Even though it is not an FHD panel, the colour reproduction is still remarkable and the visuals and text appear detailed and sharp.

The brightness levels of this panel are decent for indoor use but fares average when taken outdoors.

Processor and Performance

This time Samsung finally went for the Qualcomm chipset instead of a MediaTek processor.

The Samsung Galaxy M02s is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz.

The 4GB RAM onboard is plenty capable to run your normal apps without any hitch. Even with occasional light multitasking, this budget Android smartphone doesn’t lag too much.

Do note that this smartphone is not ideal for gaming. Modern games won’t run well on this low-powered hardware so don’t even try.

This device runs on Android 10 OS with Samsung’s own One UI on top. The One UI is very intuitive and easy to master even for someone who is a newbie.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy M02s has a triple rear camera on the back. The 13MP primary camera is followed by the 2MP depth sensor and 2MP macro lens.

The images taken from the rear camera lacks colour and the dynamic range is not that great. The depth-sensing camera helps to capture portrait shots with decent edge detection and blur.

The macro lens on this phone is decent and you can click objects from the close range but make sure to hold the device tight.

The 5MP selfie shooter fares better when it comes to natural skin tones and skin details.

Battery Life

As expected from the M-series smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M02s is powered by a 5000mAh battery that lasts for one and a half days of moderate to heavy usage.

The included 10W charger juices up the battery within 2-2.30 hours from zero to a hundred per cent.

Verdict

The Galaxy M02s is an entry-level M-series smartphone from Samsung priced at just Rs.9,999.

If you’re just a basic android user looking for a smartphone for media consumption and routine casual use, then the Samsung Galaxy M02s is an ideal choice.

Oppo releases good quality budget smartphones frequently but the company does not promote them as much as their flagship lineup.

However, we have picked one best out of the bunch which is Oppo A15. It is a 4G device loaded with plenty of good features that gives you a competent experience for a budget of Rs.10,000.

Design and Build Quality

Oppo has kept the aesthetics of this smartphone simple while maintaining the premium feel as it is.

The chassis of this smartphone is made from quality plastic materials and the device has a glossy back panel that attracts fingerprints easily.

Fret not, Oppo has included a soft silicone case in the box that not only keeps the device clean but also adds much-needed protection.

The device has a slim profile and weighs only 175g making it one of the lightest smartphones in this curated list of budget Android smartphones.

This rear section of this smartphone chassis houses the triple rear cameras inside a square bump and features a physical fingerprint scanner besides.

Display

The Oppo A15 features a 6.55-inch HD+ LCD water-drop notch display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels.

This panel has a peak brightness level of 480 nits which fares excellent when used indoors. You might face some difficulty viewing the display under direct sunlight but nothing much of a deal-breaker.

With an aspect ratio of 20:9, this panel looks wide and big. If you’re a media enthusiast then you are going to love this panel not just because it’s big but the accurate colour reproduction and decent dynamic range.

Processor and Performance

The Oppo A15 comes equipped with a MediaTek Helio P35 SoC which is an octa-core processor clocked at 2.35GHz.

This smartphone has 3GB RAM which is a bit of a letdown when compared with those devices in the same price bracket with 4GB RAM.

However, you won’t notice much difference while dealing with everyday apps and casual usage including web and social media browsing.

In terms of storage, the Oppo A15 has 32GB internal memory with the option to expand up to 256GB via the dedicated SD card slot.

The Oppo A15 comes pre-installed with ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10.

The UI is packed with features up to the brim and unlike the previous iterations of the Color OS, there is minimal bloatware that comes pre-installed with this smartphone.

Camera

As mentioned earlier, the Oppo A12 has a triple rear camera setup with an LED flash.

The primary 13MP main camera has an aperture size of f/2.2 with PDAF support. The rest of the two cameras include a 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP depth-sensing unit.

The rear camera performs reasonably well in suitable daylight conditions to click good quality images with a lot of details and colour accuracy.

The depth-sensing module helps the main camera to take portrait mode photos with decent edge detection and background blur.

The 5MP selfie camera is quite disappointing. The pictures taken from the front lens look soft and have issues with white balance but we guess it can be fixed with software updates.

Battery Life

The Oppo A15 is powered by a 4230mAh battery which will last easily for a day even with heavy usage.

The bundled 10W charger juices up the battery from 0-100 in 2:30 to 3 hours.

Verdict

The Oppo A15 is a great budget device for students, media enthusiasts, and casual users.

Except for the micro USB port, the Oppo A15 has got most of the things right for being one of the best smartphones available in the market.

Vivo is a Chinese company that aggressively markets its smartphone through offline retailers throughout India.

The Vivo Y12s is one of the first budget smartphones in India to come with the latest Android 11.

Design and Build Quality

Vivo is being consistent in terms of design after the release of the Vivo X50 Pro.

Even though it is a budget smartphone, it still looks and feels like a premium Vivo phone. The Y12s features a polycarbonate back with an attractive glacier blue colour paint job.

Speaking of the form factor, the Vivo Y12s is 8.41mm thick and weighs 191 grams. Even though it is a bit heavy, Vivo has done excellent weight distribution resulting in a good single hand usability experience.

Unfortunately, the Vivo Y12s packs an outdated micro USB port instead of a modern Type-C port. However, the 3.5mm headphone jack is retained.

In the rear, the Y12s has a vertically arranged camera unit with dual sensors assisted by an LED flash.

This budget Android smartphone features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which is kind of a first in this price segment.
